A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
Our Produttori del Barbaresco masterclass on September 12th set off a feeding frenzy. What you see below is everything that is left.
The 2021 Riservas are, unequivocally, the best vintage we have ever tasted from Produttori. Sadly, they are also the most limited. These are the last bottles in the entire state, and they are completely sold out everywhere else.
Four Single Vineyards, One Great Year
Produttori makes its single-vineyard Riservas in great vintages only, from nine historic sites inside the Barbaresco village boundaries, and releases them after four years. In 2021 the critics ran out of superlatives. Jeb Dunnuck on the Ovello: it “quietly stopped me in my tracks during the tasting.” Antonio Galloni on the Montefico: “Its concentration and persistence are the stuff dreams are made of.”
Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner called 2021 “this highly collectible vintage.” We have six Montefico, four Pora, three Ovello and one Rio Sordo.
And The Rest Of The Cellar
After the four 2021s comes everything else we have: the older Riserva vintages at today’s prices; the 2022 Barbaresco, which took in all of the Riserva fruit in a year with no Riservas; the 2015 magnum; the Langhe Nebbiolo; and the 99-point Don Fiorino.

Kerin O’Keefe
99 Points
For the last few vintages, the Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico Riserva has been even more structured than the firm’s Montestefano, and the 2021 continues this trend. It’s also incredibly fragrant, delivering scents of camphor, new leather, blood orange, hazelnut and spice while the youthfully nervous palate delivers raspberry, black cherry, star anise, truffle and nutmeg alongside brooding tannins. This has the structure and tannic backbone of a Barolo.
Vinous · Antonio Galloni
97 Points
The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is a tense, vibrant wine. Whereas in most vintages the Montefico can be a touch austere, the 2021 has plenty of energy, but also the textural depth to pull it all together. In that sense, the Montefico is a terrific example of the vintage here. Its concentration and persistence are the stuff dreams are made of. Hints of sage, graphite, chalk and mint explode on the back end. October 2025
Wine Spectator · Bruce Sanderson
97 Points
A rich version, offering flavors of black cherry, blackberry, violet, iron and spices, with a line of dense tannins underneath. The fruit builds, yet overall this is reserved and less expressive than its peers despite a deep core of fruit. Shows balance and fine length, but give this time. Best from 2030 through 2048. 1,380 cases made, 700 cases imported. March 2026
Jeb Dunnuck
97 Points
The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico pours a slightly deeper red color than the Ovello and opens with inviting aromas of sweet cedar, cherry liqueur, toasted spice, and polished leather. Medium-bodied, it delivers vibrant acidity, velvety tannins, and a bit more depth and structure on the palate. The finish is long and persistent. Roughly 16,348 bottles and 1,826 magnums were produced. Drink 2028-2050. April 2026
Wine Advocate · Monica Larner
97 Points
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is another large-scale Nebbiolo in this ladder of Riserva intensity. The wine shows notable texture and depth with flavors of dark fruit, blackcurrant and dried cherry that unfold steadily across the palate. Subtle notes of spice, cinnamon, licorice and camphor build in the background, adding complexity and dimension. Sourced from 3.9 hectares of vines on calcareous clay soils, Montefico consistently delivers a more structured and powerful expression of Barbaresco, and the 2021 vintage amplifies those qualities. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in large oak botti, this release totals 16,600 bottles. July 2026

The silkiest of the four, and the most open now. Wine Advocate: “The 2021 vintage adds an extra layer of precision, delivering a wine of remarkable focus and definition.”

Riserva is a stunning, generous wine, with great aromas and layers of delicious flavors including succulent raspberry, Morello cherry, star anise and blood orange. While it’s already immensely enjoyable, it also has a long life ahead. September 2025

A reflective, saturated ruby red color, the 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Pora opens with ripe aromas of raspberry, black cherry cordial, toasted cedar, and forest earth. Medium-bodied, it saturates the palate with plush fruit and an approachable texture while maintaining good length. It feels like one of the more immediate wines of the range in this noble vintage… Drink 2026-2046. April 2026

The one that stopped Jeb Dunnuck’s team in its tracks, and to Ian D’Agata “easily the Produttori’s best wine from Ovello in years.”
Jeb Dunnuck · Audrey Frick

Displaying a saturated medium red hue, the 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello offers notes of dusty cedar, red cherries, raspberries, and crushed stones, although the wood tones will need time to fully integrate. Medium-bodied, the palate has beautiful brightness, with hints of apricot and stone fruit along with a more linear, elegant structure. For me, this wine holds a very special place in the range and quietly stopped me in my tracks during the tasting… Drink 2026-2056. April 2026
Kerin O’Keefe

The compelling 2021 Ovello Riserva from Produttori del Barbaresco opens with captivating aromas of dark culinary spice, underbrush, rose and mentholated notes. Delicious and full-bodied, the palate doles out ripe Marasca cherry, cranberry, star anise and ground clove. Firm, well-integrated tannins lend just the right amount of grip while fresh acidity keeps it bright and balanced. September 2025

Finesse over power. Galloni: “The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo marries finesse and power.” We have one bottle.
Jeb Dunnuck · Audrey Frick
97 Points
The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo pours a jeweled ruby hue, slightly deeper than the Pora, and shows an inviting nose of framboise, wet river stones, lavender, and small purple flowers. Medium-bodied, it reveals bright red fruit and cranberry notes with well-defined tannins and a mouthwatering granular texture… Drink 2027-2057. April 2026
Vinous · Antonio Galloni
96 Points
The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo marries finesse and power. Open-knit aromatics make a strong first impression. Layered and resonant in the glass, with tons of supporting structure, the Rio Sordo is going to need a few years to come into its own. Crushed rose petal, cedar, spice and tobacco lend notable finesse. The 2021 needs time, but it’s got the goods. The explosive, aromatic finish is sublime. October 2025

In 2022 Produttori bottled no single-vineyard Riservas. Jeb Dunnuck: “all fruit going into the 2022 Barbaresco.” Galloni: “The inclusion of some juice from Riserva lots is a great help… All things considered, this is a stellar showing.”

In 2022, the estate did not bottle any single-vineyard Riservas, with all fruit going into the 2022 Barbaresco. It pours a jeweled ruby red color and reveals a seductive yet very pure nose of cherry cordial, crushed roses, sweet herbs, and peppery spice. Medium-bodied, it has supple ripeness in the fruit yet wonderful clarity in its tannins and acidity, giving the wine excellent definition and balance. Drink 2026-2050. April 2026

Named for the parish priest who united 19 growers in 1958 to found the cooperative: 50% grapes from the nine famous crus and 50% from other top sites, aged thirty months in 15-hectoliter French casks. This is a must-have for any Nebbiolo lover, opening with aromas of reconstituted cherries bathed in sweet and savory spices and dried rosebuds. Supple tannins gently coat the palate, while the plush red fruit notes roll around with sweet tea and dried leaf notes on the sublime finish. Drink now in perpetuity. April 2024

Incredible aromas of white truffle, meat, wet earth, lightly burnt orange peel and pure fruit. Medium-bodied and very compact, with a block of silky tannins that run through the palate and then come out at the end with a gorgeous texture. It’s very drinkable now, but will age wonderfully. This is a special release. They never made a serious blended riserva in their history.
