A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
In June I wrote to you about the 2023 Evening Land Seven Springs Pinot Noir. Since then two more critics have weighed in. Decanter gave it 94: “Pinot Noir that exhibits an exhilarating alpine character.” James Suckling gave it 94: “Deep and complex… a long and racy finish.” That puts three of the world’s major critics at 94 on the same bottle.
Seven Springs is one of the historic vineyards of Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills, planted in the early 1980s and farmed biodynamically.
The Team Behind It
Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman, the team behind Domaine de la Côte and Sandhi in California, took over Evening Land in 2014, and the 2023 is from their years together. In the documentary SOMM III, their Domaine de la Côte 2014 Bloom’s Field tied for first in a blind tasting of Pinot Noir with a Volnay Premier Cru from Marquis d’Angerville. That is the bar they set for themselves.
Wine Spectator’s Top 100
Wine Spectator has put Evening Land on its Top 100 three times: the 2007 Seven Springs Pinot Noir at No. 97 in 2009; the 2012 La Source Pinot Noir at 98 points and No. 3 in 2015, which Wine Spectator called “Oregon’s highest-scoring wine to date”; and the 2018 Seven Springs Chardonnay at No. 27 in 2021. The 2023 Pinot has the scores to ask whether a fourth is coming.
Why It Tastes Like Burgundy
Sixteen months in neutral French oak, then finished in concrete, at 13.1% alcohol. Wine Advocate: “The medium-bodied palate has a silky texture and is bursting with berry and citrus flavors. It’s balanced by mouthwatering acidity and has a long, bright finish.” Light on its feet, vivid, transparent: Oregon Pinot in the Burgundian mold, at $34.99.
