Dear Artisans,

Once a year I pull the numbers on what actually leaves this shop, and the same seven Italian whites come back every time. Not because we push them — because people finish a bottle and come back for two more.

That is a different measurement than a big score or a one-time splash. These are the wines that became somebody’s house white.

What Best-Selling Actually Means Here

Any shop can sell a lot of one wine once. What I care about is the reorder. Every bottle in this guide is bought again by the same people, month after month, and several of them go out by the case to the same households.

That is the whole reason I put this together as a guide rather than another single-producer offer. If you have been meaning to find a white you can keep in the door of the fridge without thinking about it, the answer is somewhere in these seven.

Why Italy Wins This Argument

A white Burgundy of comparable seriousness starts around triple these prices, and a Sancerre with this much mineral drive is not far behind. Italy has the altitude, the volcanic and alpine soils, and — still — the worse publicists.

Terlano’s Vorberg is the clearest example. The previous release took 99 points from James Suckling and placed fourth in his Top 100 Wines of Italy. A Pinot Bianco. Fourth, in the country that also makes Barolo, Brunello and Amarone.

2022 Livio Felluga “Illivio”

Friuli Colli Orientali D.O.C. · Pinot Bianco · Chardonnay · Picolit

Hand-harvested in small crates, fermented and settled on the lees in small oak casks. Apricot, mango and yellow peach over sweet spice, acacia honey and pastry cream, closing on candied kumquat and a pleasing iodine tang. Strength united with elegance, exactly as the Patriarch would have wanted it. Pour it with fish, risotto or fresh cheeses.

One of the oldest farming families on the volcano.

2025 Tornatore Etna Bianco

Etna D.O.C. · 100% Carricante · Sicily, Italy

Carricante grown on volcanic soils terraced at 650 metres on the northern slope of the volcano. Straw yellow with a green shadow, mineral and faintly mentholated, green apple at the core. The Tornatores have lived in Sicily since 1680 and trace their Etna grape growing to 1865 — this is one of the oldest farming families on the mountain.

2025 Vietti Roero Arneis

Roero D.O.C.G. · 100% Arneis · Piedmont, Italy

This is the bottle that single-handedly resurrected the Arneis grape. Alfredo Currado made the first single-varietal vinification in 1967, when the variety was close to extinction. Without it, Roero Arneis as a category would not exist. Cold fermented in stainless to hold the natural CO2, no malolactic, aged on fine lees.

2023 Vietti Timorasso “Derthona”

Colli Tortonesi D.O.C. · 100% Timorasso · Piedmont, Italy

Blended from Vietti’s holdings in three distinct zones of the Derthona appellation. Fermented in ceramic, wood and stainless, no malolactic, ten months on fine lees with batonnage. Drinks brilliantly out of the gate, and after two or three years develops the signature hydrocarbon note that makes Timorasso the closest thing Italy has to aged Riesling.

2024 Terlano Pinot Bianco

Alto Adige D.O.C. · 100% Pinot Bianco · Stainless Steel

This is the wine we hand people who tell us they do not like Italian whites. Apple and pear over raspberry and lime, a touch of camomile and lemongrass, then quince and a salty mineral snap that keeps going after you have swallowed. 2024 was the wettest spring in the South Tyrol since 1965 and Pinot Bianco was hit hardest — yields down as much as forty percent. Small crops concentrate. You can taste it.

2024 Terlano Cuvee Terlaner Classico

Alto Adige D.O.C. · 60% Pinot Bianco · 30% Chardonnay · 10% Sauvignon

This blend was one of the wines Terlano made in its founding year of 1893, and they have not stopped since. Pinot Bianco supplies the frame and the acid, Chardonnay the warmth, Sauvignon the top note. Eighty percent rests in stainless, twenty percent on fine lees in large oak. Green apple, white peach, lemon balm, mint, then a long, mineral, faintly spicy close. Wine Enthusiast has it drinking well through 2045, which at this price is close to absurd.

2022 Terlano Pinot Bianco Riserva “Vorberg”

Alto Adige D.O.C. · Single Vineyard · 450 to 650 Metres

Vorberg is a south-facing slope on the Monzoccolo above Terlano, steep and sunny, planted between 450 and 650 metres. Hand-picked and sorted, pressed as whole clusters, fermented slowly in 70 and 30 hectolitre oak casks, then a full year on the lees. Honeydew, white peach, quince jelly and camomile against a hard mineral spine of flint, with a creamy weight that somehow never blunts the salt. The previous release took 99 points from James Suckling and fourth place in his Top 100 Wines of Italy. The 2022 is a warmer, drier year, rounder and more open early.

The Bottom Line

Seven whites, twenty-nine scores, none under 90 — and 5% off until the clock runs out.

If you want one bottle to start with, make it the Terlano Pinot Bianco at $26.99. It is the wine we hand people who say they do not like Italian whites, and it changes their mind more often than anything else on the shelf. If you want the one that will still be extraordinary in a decade, it is the Vorberg.

And if you just want the answer to what goes in the fridge door for the rest of the year, buy three of these and stop thinking about it. That is what most of the people on this list already did.
