Before You Pour

Three Questions People Always Google About This Wine

“Why does an old vine make better wine?”

A young vine is greedy — it grows lots of mediocre fruit. An 81-year-old vine has given up on quantity. It drops its yield and pours everything into a handful of tiny, intense berries. Smaller berries mean more skin per drop — more color, more structure, more flavor. And roots that have spent eight decades digging 20+ feet down reach minerals a young vine will never taste. Old vines don’t try harder. They’ve stopped trying to be anything but great.

“Is Zinfandel a serious wine — or just a cookout red?”

Both, and that’s the secret. Most Zinfandel is a fruit bomb. Turley proved Zin could be a trophy wine — structured, age-worthy, and built to sit on the same table as a $300 Cabernet. The Dusi is the proof: rich enough for a brisket, refined enough for your best glassware.

“Will it age, or should I drink it now?”

Yes and yes. It’s gorgeous tonight and built to evolve through 2035, when the sage-and-pepper notes turn savory and complex. Which is exactly why you don’t buy one bottle. You buy a case — drink some now, watch the rest get better.

The Pedigree

Great Wine Is Made by People

Helen Turley — the woman who invented the cult wine. Before founding Marcassin (her own Pinot and Chardonnay now run $500+ a bottle), Helen was the founding winemaker for her brother Larry’s label. She is the “super-consultant” who took Colgin and Bryant Family from startups to 100-point legends — proving California could rival first-growth Bordeaux. She brought that same maximum-intensity credo to Turley.

Larry Turley — the ER doctor who resuscitates vineyards. Larry spent 25 years as an emergency-room physician before turning that instinct on dying 19th- and 20th-century vineyards. He sees gnarled old vines as living time capsules worth saving. You’re drinking the result of his obsession.

Tegan Passalacqua — the world’s leading authority on old vines. Turley’s current Director of Winemaking and co-founder of the Historic Vineyard Society. Under Tegan, the wines have reached their highest critical peak — the juiciness and power sommeliers now clamor for.

The Allocation

2022 Turley Dusi Vineyard Zinfandel

Paso Robles · Templeton Gap

Planted in 1945 by Dante Dusi — still farmed by the Dusi family today. These head-trained, dry-farmed vines are now 81 years old. They have lived through:

World War II · The Moon Landing
The Dot-Com Boom · Decades of Drought

Eighty-one years in the ground. Fifteen months in French and American oak. One of the most consistently celebrated single-vineyard Zinfandels in California — the kind of track record that turns a bottle into a near-guarantee.

The Accolades
95 Points — Wine Spectator
A seductive Zin — rich and polished yet handsomely structured, with raspberry, cranberry, roasted sage and loamy white pepper, ending in big but refined tannins. Drink now through 2035. 1,732 cases made.
— Tim Fish, May 2025
94 Points — Vinous
Racy, silky and super-expressive — crushed flowers, Kirsch, sweet red berry, mint, white pepper and citrus, beautifully lifted in a sculpted, vibrant Paso Robles Zin.
— Antonio Galloni, Dec 2023
93 Points — Wine Advocate
A plethora of red berry fruit, dried orange peel, raspberry preserves and new leather; surprisingly red-fruited and light on its feet, with a long, complex finish.
— Matthew Luczy, Jun 2024

Pair it with: smoked BBQ brisket or braised short ribs · aged Manchego or smoked Gouda · grilled portobellos with herbs.

Why a Case, Not a Bottle

1. Heritage you can’t reorder. Fruit from 81-year-old vines, 1,732 cases made worldwide. When it’s gone, the next chance is a year on a waitlist.

2. It gets better in your cellar. Peak drinking 2024–2035. A case lets you taste it evolve instead of guessing.

3. The ultimate table wine. Versatile enough that you’ll always have the right bottle for a Tuesday or a holiday.

4. The math only works by the case. A full case of Turley costs what two bottles of its Napa peers do.

“Exotic pineapple, kiwi and grape candy with beeswax and tarragon; medium-bodied, loaded with tropical fruit, a rounded texture and a long, floral finish.”

Sauvignon Blanc was one of the first wines ever made at the Turley Estate back in 1993. Those vines became Zinfandel long ago — but Turley has replanted a small block to dry-farmed, head-trained Sauvignon Blanc from heritage Napa budwood. Larry is hoarding as much as he can for himself. Only 24 bottles coming to Artisan. Pre-order now or you won’t see it.
