About the Winery:
Carlisle is a small Sonoma County winery specializing in the production of old-vine, vineyard designated Zinfandels and red Rhône varieties (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Petite Sirah). They also produce three delicious white wines, two of which are blends from historic, old-vine vineyards plus Sonoma County's first ever Grüner Veltliner.
About this Wine:
Papera Ranch is a grande dame of the Russian River Valley, planted in 1934 by Celestino (Charlie) Papera. While many old-vine vineyards contain plenty of mixed black varieties, most of the blocks at Papera Ranch are 95+% Zinfandel. One block, however, does contain a significant amount of Carignan with a sprinkling of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié. Given its cool location, this is one of the winery's later Zinfandel vineyards to be picked.
With normal yields of approximately 3.25 tons to the acre, Papera seemed oblivious to the lack of water in this drought year. Picked in three passes between October 1st and October 6th, we opted to bleed off 7 to 12% of the juice from each tank to produce a more concentrated wine. Also, since tank space was at a premium, it helped prevent the tanks we filled from overflowing during fermentation, something that is never fun to clean up! Aged in all French oak, 21% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes:
Medium-dark to dark garnet-ruby. An incredibly gorgeous, hi-toned nose of raspberry, cherry, Red Haven peach, and fresh tobacco. It’s difficult to pull your nose away from the glass! On the palate, medium-full bodied with flavors of raspberry, red licorice whips, cinnamon, and blood orange. So jubilant, so refreshing. Just an utter joy to drink. Enjoy now but with ample acidity and perfect balance, this wine should still be in fine form in 2036. (MRO - 01/16/25)

Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Impeccably structured and rich with personality, this red captures the essence of Russian River Zin, offering dark cherry and blackberry flavors accented by fruitcake spices, dried fig, orange oil and savory pepper tones that finish with youthful but polished tannins. Drink now through 2035. 1,044 cases made." - Tim Fish (Aug 2025)
95 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"A youthful magenta/purple-tinged color, the 2022 Zinfandel Papera Ranch reveals more high-toned aromas of cinnamon, juicy fresh mixed berry fruit, and fresh pine. Medium to full-bodied, it has a more linear feel at this stage. It's going to take time to open up and show its best, but I love its more nervous energy at this stage already. Drink 2025-2040. I love it. (Drink between 2025-2040)." - Audrey Frick (Jun 2024)
93 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2022 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is silky, layered and super-refined. Crushed flowers, red-toned fruit, cedar, leather and dried flowers all meld together in the glass. The 2022 doesn’t have the exuberance of the very best years, but its balance and overall freshness make up for that. Best of all, this will drink well with minimal cellaring. (Drink between 2027-2037)." - Antonio Galloni (Jan 2025)
