A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
This is the last call on the 2021 Heitz Cellar Napa Valley Cabernet. We have 5 cases left of this vintage, and it will sell out.
Since we first offered it in January, this has been the Cabernet our Artisans keep coming back for, and it is easy to see why: 99 points from Decanter, 94 from Wine Spectator and James Suckling, and a price that has come down to $74.99.
Ninety-Nine Points
Decanter’s Jonathan Cristaldi: “Remarkably pure and fresh. Pristine black cherry and blackberry, layered with beautiful violet aromas.” He calls its intensity “truly emblematic of the vintage.”
That 99 is the same score Decanter gave the most coveted 2021 Napa Cabernets, at a fraction of the price, and it came in ahead of Heitz’s own Lot C-91 (98) and Trailside (97) from the same vintage:
Napa Cabernet Decanter Market
Bond “Vecina” 2021 99 about $915
Lokoya Mount Veeder 2021 99 about $580
Schrader Beckstoffer To Kalon 2021 99 about $550
Shafer Hillside Select 2021 99 about $400
Heitz Cellar Napa Valley 2021 99 $74.99
Vinous rates the 2021 Napa vintage 98 points. Antonio Galloni calls it “a fabulous vintage in Napa Valley,” with wines of “tremendous energy as well as finesse,” and warns that production is down sharply, “30-50% in many cases.” Wine Spectator gives it 97 points: “This vintage cements the new style in Napa.” And Cristaldi himself: “I’m stuffing as many 2021s in my personal cellar as I can make room for.” The winery calls 2021 one of the best Napa vintages of the last two decades.
What The Collectors Say
The collectors on CellarTracker agree. “One of the great mid-tier Napa Cabernet wines you can find.” “The best standard Heitz Napa in a long time.” “Better than many other more expensive Cali-Cabs.” And our favorite: “Everyone should taste this wine.” Their notes are in the wine’s card below.
It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Heitz’s own vineyards in Rutherford, Oakville, Howell Mountain, St. Helena and Oak Knoll, at a moderate 13.5% alcohol. Wine Spectator says drink now through 2038.
Fifty Years After Paris
Joe and Alice Heitz founded Heitz Cellar in 1961, and in 1966 they bottled Napa Valley’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet, Martha’s Vineyard. The 1970 Martha’s Vineyard was one of the six California Cabernets poured at the 1976 Judgment of Paris.
Fifty years later, on May 24, 2026, James and Marie Suckling re-created that tasting blind in San Francisco, and the top wine was the 1970 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard. (There is a bottle of 1970 Heitz Cabernet in our library list below.)
Today Brittany Sherwood directs the winemaking, Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy runs Lawrence Wine Estates, which owns Heitz, and the estate vineyards are certified organic. The 2021 Napa Valley is your way into all of it.
Last Call
There are 5 cases left of the 2021, and when they are gone, this vintage is gone from our shelves. It will sell out.
Below it, you will find every other Heitz wine still in our cellar: Martha’s Vineyard, Trailside, Linda Falls, Ink Grade, Lot C-91 in magnum and a 1970 Cabernet from our library.

Decanter · Jonathan Cristaldi
99 Points
Remarkably pure and fresh. Pristine black cherry and blackberry, layered with beautiful violet aromas. Everything builds with precision and focus, supported by gorgeously firm, taut, mineral-rich tannins that bring energy and drive. The wine is compact and tightly wound at this youthful stage, its intensity truly emblematic of the vintage. March 2025
Wine Spectator
94 Points
Ripe, fresh and focused, with a lovely beam of red currant plum coulis that stretches out alongside hints of savory, violet, tobacco and singed cedar. Finishes with a late twang of iron. Nicely done. Drink now through 2038. November 2025
James Suckling
94 Points
Dark fruit aromas of blackberries, bitter chocolate, dried herbs, blackcurrants, black olives and graphite. The palate is full-bodied with a textural, rounded mouthfeel and finely integrated tannins, leading to a savory, fruit-driven finish. Delicious. Drink or hold. May 2025
Wine Advocate · Joe Czerwinski
93 Points
It’s a classically proportioned wine, with cedar, vanilla and black cherries all delivered via a medium- to full-bodied palate. It shows excellent structure for an entry-level wine, firm but approachable, with a lengthy finish. It should be a steakhouse staple. October 2025
Vinous · Antonio Galloni
93 Points
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is fabulous. Plump and vibrant, with good up-front fruit and bright acids, the 2021 captures the essence of modern classicism that is typical of the Heitz wines today. This is a superb entry-level offering from Heitz. Floral overtones brighten the finish. December 2024
