A Personal Note

Dear Artisans,

When Walt and Joan Flowers planted Pinot Noir on the ridges of the extreme Sonoma Coast in 1989, the conventional wisdom said the grapes would never ripen out there: too much fog, too much wind, too close to a cold ocean.

The conventional wisdom was wrong.

Those wind-blown, salt-touched ridges under two miles from the Pacific turned out to make some of the most vivid cool-climate wine in California, and Flowers became the estate that put the True Sonoma Coast on the map. For the last weekend of summer, we are putting three of their wines on a 24-hour sale, from $44.99.

The Chardonnay Grew Up

When we last offered the 2024 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, it carried a single early review. The full slate has since landed, and it reads like a coronation: 95 from James Suckling, 95 and an Editor's Choice from Wine Enthusiast, 93 from Jeb Dunnuck, 93 from Wine Spectator. At $44.99 on this sale, it is the best white-wine buy in the store for your last warm evenings of the year.

And The Last Two Bottles Of The Crown Jewel

Sea View Ridge is the estate vineyard this whole story is built on: 1,400 to 1,800 feet up, above the fog line, shallow rocky soils, the ocean in sight for miles. The 2023 came off a cold, late vintage in a three-day harvest and earned 98 points from James Suckling, who calls it “built for aging,” plus 97 from Decanter. Only 1,900 cases were made.

We are down to our last two bottles, and they are in this sale at $109.97.

“From hillside plantings of California Old Wente selections, a textural and flavorful wine with notes of yellow peach, yellow flowers and chalky minerality. Medium-bodied with a silky mouthfeel, juicy round acidity and a long finish that carries flavors of lemon and tangerine oil. Drink or hold.”

“Zesty lemon, lime, and green herb aromas mingle with citrus blossoms and cinnamon on the nose. The palate delivers a surge of vibrant acidity and pithy texture, with flavors of green apple, Meyer lemon, toasted hazelnut, and chopped lemon balm echoing for over a minute.”

“Fresh on the nose with notes of lifted spice, compact red berries, Bing cherries, roses, and sweet herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, with a polished and fine texture, a silky feel, and clean elegance through the finish. A lovely and charming Pinot Noir with a lot of finesse to drink over the coming 8-10 years.” — Audrey Frick

“Compelling, evolving and earthy umami notes, such as grilled nori, join pomegranate, blue fruit and black cherries. Medium- to full-bodied. Bright, juicy but also concentrated on the palate, showing incredible length and energy, this has fresh, ripe fruit tannins with a savory quality to the acidity. Built for aging. Drink or hold.”
Decanter Magazine
97 Points
“A beautifully bright and intense red. Aromas of wild fennel, fresh pine, and wildflowers rise from the glass, followed by red, crunchy berries and a splash of pomegranate juice. There's a whisper of salinity, a natural reflection of the vineyard's proximity to the Pacific. Nothing dominates; each element weaves together quite nicely. Already drinking beautifully in its youth, it's also a wine worth cellaring.”

“Flowers proved great Pinot & Chard could grow two miles from the Pacific. The Chardonnay just collected two 95s, and there are two bottles of the 98-point Sea View Ridge left. Close out summer properly. 24 hours, then it's done.”
