A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
In August I wrote to you about two Massican whites, the 2025 Annia and Gemina. Today all four of Dan Petroski’s whites are on our shelves: the Annia, the Sauvignon Blanc, the Gemina and the Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay.
Napa’s Only White-Wine Label
Decanter’s Jonathan Cristaldi tells the story in one line: “Founded in 2009 by Dan Petroski, formerly of Larkmead, Massican remains Napa Valley’s only white-wine-only label.”
Petroski, he writes, “marries his Italian roots with Californian terroir”, and the wines “are celebrated for their freshness, mineral clarity, and Mediterranean flair.” Think Friuli and the coast of southern Italy, made from Napa and Sonoma vineyards.
Four Times In Wine Spectator’s Top 100
Wine Spectator has put Massican in its Top 100 four times: the 2017 Annia at #86 of 2018, the 2020 Sauvignon Blanc at #32 of 2021, the 2022 Annia at #72 of 2024 and the 2024 Annia at #32 of 2025. Wine Enthusiast has listed Massican in its Top 100 four times as well.
The 2025 Annia has already earned 94 from James Suckling (“Tangy, brilliant, light-bodied and fresh at 11.8% alcohol”) and 92 from Wine Spectator: “Sleek and refreshing.”
The Two New Arrivals
The Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay comes from one of California’s most famous Chardonnay sites, founded by Larry Hyde in Carneros in 1979, from Musqué-clone and old-Wente parcels planted between 1979 and 1992. James Suckling gave the 2025 95: “A brilliant, bracing, almost electric wine.” Wine Spectator counts just 606 cases.
The Sauvignon Blanc is Petroski’s tip of the hat to Friuli: lime zest, green tea and cut grass, then yuzu, ginger and lemongrass. Suckling has the 2025 at 93, and Antonio Galloni called the 2024 “one of the best wines I have tasted from Massican.”
On The Best Wine Lists
Massican’s Sauvignon Blanc held a by-the-glass spot at The French Laundry for ten straight years, and you’ll find the Annia on the lists at La Toque and Michelin-starred The Village Pub today.

95 Points
The 2024 Massican Annia is a beguiling white blend, lean and layered at just 11.8% ABV, yet richly complex. From the moment it’s poured, a subtle, flinty-smoky reduction greets the nose, leading into fragrant cascades of white flowers, honeysuckle, ripe yellow apple, and poached pear. On the palate, grapefruit emerges with both richness and density, threaded through with sea‑spray salinity—as if pink Himalayan salt had washed the shore—while crisp, zesty acidity brings lift and tension. Sourced from small vineyards across Napa and Sonoma, this flagship Massican blend comprises Ribolla Gialla, Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay, and a touch of Pinot Bianco, all picked and fermented separately in a mix of French oak and stainless steel, before being carefully blended six weeks prior to bottling. Founded in 2009 by Dan Petroski—formerly of Larkmead—Massican remains Napa Valley’s only white-wine–only label. Petroski marries his Italian roots with Californian terroir, and his wines are celebrated for their freshness, mineral clarity, and Mediterranean flair. Jonathan Cristaldi, Aug 2025

The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc is one of the best wines I have tasted from Massican. Soaring varietal notes make a strong first impression. Deep and heady, the 2024 is a wine of dimension, complexity and class. Tangerine oil, sage, mint, tomato leaf and dried flowers stain the palate. This is so impressive. Antonio Galloni

Mouthwatering and intense, there’s plenty to admire in this mix of lemon sherbet, tangerine, dried mango and candied ginger. Details of lemon verbena, lime zest, kumquat and toasted green tea linger on the long, expressive finish.

Full and rich-tasting at first sip, then brilliant in acidity and citrus on the palate. Lots of chalky, mineral, lemon-zest and saline flavors are tight and refreshing. So linear and energetic. Made from 50% greco, 34% falanghina and 16% fiano. Drink now or hold.

The 2025 ’Gemina’ combines Greco and Falanghina with a touch of Fiano. The name is inspired by an ancient varietal that dates back to the first century AD, called Aminea Gemina. This is fat, heady and rich with terrific flavor range. Citrus and tropical fruits mingle well with salty and stony minerals on the palate, with beeswax nuances. Drink 2026-2033.

The 2024 Gemina is one of Massican’s most distinctive blends, composed of 49% Falanghina, 45% Greco and 6% Fiano. Whole-cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel and oak barrels, it was aged for five months in a mix of stainless steel and used French oak. Bright and super lemony, the wine pulses with lime zest and soaring acidity, underscored by oyster-shell minerals and a distinctly savoury, saline edge. Light- to medium-bodied, it carries a lifted energy, layered with white flowers, salted Marcona almonds and a snappy, zippy finish that leaves the palate refreshed and wanting more.

95 Points
Sourced from the renowned Hyde Vineyard, this is a Chardonnay defined by precision rather than power, proving that richness and restraint can coexist beautifully. The aromas are immediately inviting, with green apple, jasmine, and ripe pineapple rising effortlessly from the glass. The palate is layered yet focused, unfolding with lemon curd, nectarine, and citrus oil before a vibrant thread of saline minerality carries the wine through a long, polished finish. There’s an understated confidence here. The wine is full-bodied without excess, textured without heaviness, and impeccably composed from start to finish. It captures both Hyde Vineyard’s pedigree and Massican’s signature Mediterranean sensibility. It’s the kind of bottle that somehow always seems to disappear before anyone is ready for it to go empty. A brilliant, bracing, almost electric wine that’s racy in texture, saline and mineral in flavor, and eventually rounded and creamy as it opens in the glass. Unusually high in acidity, very fresh, linear and energetic. Light-bodied at less than 13% alcohol. Drink now or hold.

A great new wine from this famed site, the 2025 ’Hyde’ Chardonnay comes from this historic location in the Carneros district. It is loaded with salty minerality on the palate. Mango and pineapple notes combine with nutty and earthy nuances on the palates with shades of wet rock. The combination of weight, length and finesse is outstanding. Drink 2026-2034.

Sleek and intense, with mouthwatering, bright, lip-smacking acidity that acts as the backbone for intense flavors of salted and preserved lemon, yellow apple, and pomelo. Freshly grated ginger, crunchy star fruit and sea salt notes add to the intensity, with touches of white tea and jasmine on the finish. Drink now through 2038. 606 cases made.
