A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
In a small corner of Alsace, 11th-generation winemaker Nicolas Laugner is quietly breaking the rules. He uses the same méthode traditionnelle as the grand houses in Reims, with the second fermentation in the bottle. And he uses 100% Pinot Noir, the same noble grape behind the world’s most expensive rosé Champagnes.
So why is it $21.99? Because it’s grown a few miles outside a coordinate on a map. You aren’t paying for the multi-million-dollar marketing budgets of the big labels. You’re paying for the soil, the persistent bubbles and the craft.
James Suckling gave it 91 points: “Sleek and round-textured with fine bubbles and a chalky, mineral aftertaste.”

Why This Matters
• Our #1 selling sparkling wine, regardless of price point, for 18 years running. Not the #1 rosé. Not the #1 value bubbly. The #1 sparkling wine we sell, period, every Champagne and prestige cuvée included.
• Only $2 total price change in 18 years. We’ve fought the global wine-price hike bottle by bottle and absorbed as much of it as we could.
• 100% Pinot Noir, méthode traditionnelle. The same grape and the same second fermentation in bottle that the grand houses of Reims use for $80 to $300 rosé Champagne.
• A Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier are regulars. One buys three cases every six weeks.

A pure limestone Pinot Noir made the same way as the great Champagne houses make theirs: 12 to 18 months aging sur lattes, 4.1 grams per liter of residual sugar, salmon in color, with brioche and red-fruit aromas. Wonderful as an aperitif, and it holds its own with charcuterie, salmon or a berry dessert. Every review is below.

This shows notes of pink nectarines, cherry blossoms, dried citrus peel and subtle hints of pastry crust. Sleek and round-textured with fine bubbles and a chalky, mineral aftertaste. Pinot noir. Drink now. Jan 2024
Wine Advocate · Stephan Reinhardt

The salmon-colored NV Crémant d’Alsace Rosé Brut is a pure limestone Pinot Noir that opens with a very attractive brioche and fruit aroma on the pure yet intense and elegant nose that is reminiscent of red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and pomegranate. Round and supple on the palate, this is a mouth-filling and charming sparkling wine with 4.1 grams per liter of residual sugar and a clear, well-structured finish. The wine ages sur lattes between 12 and 18 months and drinks well as aperitif but also with certain desserts. 12.4% alcohol. Mar 2023

Named for the mother’s maiden name of Jean-Remy Rapeneau, a fourth-generation vintner of the Rapeneau family. The fruit comes from Premier Cru vineyards in the Vallée de la Marne, grown by the more than 100 small family growers of the Coopérative Vinicole Le Val-d’Or. White fruit, lemon and citrus on the nose; balanced vivacity on the palate, then a satisfying chalk finish. Over the past year it has been one of our two best-selling Champagnes.

There’s an open-knit, almost airy feel to this vibrant Champagne, which carries a concentrated range of juicy pear and black raspberry fruit, with hints of crystallized honey. Shows gingersnap biscuit and verbena flavors on the chalky texture, gaining momentum on the racy, zesty finish. Oct 2015

An attractively yeasty nose combines notes of apple, pear, acacia blossom and a hint of apricot. There is fine complexity to the utterly delicious flavors that possess reasonably good concentration, indeed sufficiently so that there is a sappy, even creamy texture to the mid-palate that carries over to the lingering finish. This will not wow you with its refinement as the mousse is not especially fine yet it’s rare to find this kind of depth anywhere close to this price point. Thus, as a candidate for an everyday sipper, this is highly recommended. Jan 2015

Bottle-fermented by the méthode traditionnelle, with about 12% reserve wine from a solera-style fractional blend in every non-vintage cuvée, and every bottle ages a minimum of 24 months on the lees before it leaves the winery. Tasting Panel: “A remarkable value with the poise and presence of wines twice the price.”

Winemaker Jeffrey Jinda uses a solera-like system of fractional blending to make the NV Brut Excellence, typically adding 12 percent of reserve wine to his non-vintage blends, this one a combination of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir… Given 24 months on the lees, it shows an impressive depth of texture and balanced richness, with lovely notes of creme caramel and brioche.

A remarkable value with the poise and presence of wines twice the price. Composed of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, it rings clear and pure on a nose marked by toast, Asian pear, yellow apple, honeysuckle, and hazelnut; on the palate, lilting, lip-smacking acidity and a creamy tang usher in more orchard fruit enhanced by hints of white fig and apricot.

Scharffenberger has been making Mendocino sparkling wine since 1981, from 120 acres of its own vineyards plus trusted growers in the county, cooled by the Pacific. The color comes from adding four to five percent of Pinot Noir wine to the blend before the second fermentation in bottle.

Made from 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir, the NV Rosé is lovely in color and style, tasting of richly rewarding berry fruit and shortbread cookie. Rounded, creamy, and approachable in style, it will please a wide range of palates…

The poppy on the label of this suave blend of 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir is a tribute to the superblooms that occur throughout California in springtime—but it also hints at the dry wine’s floral subtleties. There’s a faint touch of lilac on a nose brimming with fresh-baked sourdough, cherry, and blood orange, while rose graces the finish, preceded by splashes of wild strawberry, lemon rind, and Gala apple.

Bailly, as the producer puts it, is “the birthplace of the AOC Crémant de Bourgogne.” Since 1972 its wines have aged in an underground quarry, cellars hewn out of the limestone bedrock. This one blends the appellation’s four grapes, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay and Aligoté, and the producer calls it its easiest-drinking Crémant: clean, rounded and fresh.

The Bottom Line
18 years. Two Master-level palates.
One extraordinary $21.99 bottle.
When the same bottle is our #1 sparkling seller for 18 years running, when a Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier keep coming back to buy cases of it, and when San Francisco restaurants charge about three times our price for it, that wine has already made its case a thousand times over. This email is just the introduction, or the reminder.
Grab a bottle, grab the magnum, or explore the rest of the sparkling shelf, from $23.97 to $39.97. Either way, tonight’s dinner just got a little more celebratory.
Cheers,
— James Tran
