About The Winemaker:
The Wittmann family has been growing grapes and producing wine in the small Rheinhessen village of Westhofen since 1663. Today, the estate cultivates 62 acres of vines in the rolling limestone hills found in the southern part of the region, just west of the Rhine river valley. They have been pioneers in developing the full-bodied, well-balanced style of dry wines for which the region has become known. And they were early adopters of organic (1990) and biodynamic (2004) viticulture.
Riesling is the dominant grape variety, accounting for 65% of the estate’s vineyard area. They also produce the three Pinot varieties (Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir), as well as Silvaner. In addition, small quantities of Scheurebe, Chardonnay and some minor varieties are grown.
About the Wine:
Wittmann Riesling Trocken comes from vineyards located in the limestone hills just west of the Rhine Valley. These vines are planted in loess, limestone and marl soils, with subsoils of clayey sand or gravel. They have been cultivated using organic agriculture since 1990 and biodynamic agriculture since 2004.
Once the grapes have been meticulously selected in the winery, the wine is gently pressed and the resulting must is vinified with native yeasts in large used wooden barrels.
Philipp Wittmann is recognised as one of the best German winemakers thanks to the mastery he shows through his dry Rieslings. This is the case with Wittmann Riesling Trocken, a lightly full-bodied and very mineral wine with very marked acidity.
Ratings & Reviews
92 Points - James Suckling:
"Cool and herbal on the nose, this youthful, entry-level dry riesling has a wealth of citrus aromas and a chalky character on the compact, medium-bodied palate. Impressive length for this category, and the crisp, lemony acidity is beautifully integrated. The blend contains declassified wines from 15-year-old vines in the Auelerde and Brunnenhuschen GG sites. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink from release."
