Notes from the Winemaker:

The terrifyingly steep Brauneberg hillside has been revered as a top vineyard site since the Romans first cultivated wine grapes in the Mosel valley in the second century. The Juffer Sonnenuhr is the choicest center cut of the Brauneberg — the steepest and most south-facing  part of the hillside that surrounds the sundial. This Grosse Lage (grand cru) site produces profound, distinctive wines with great purity and concentration. Auslese is a rich, concentrated, full-bodied style of Riesling, with a lively interplay between fruity sweetness and vibrant acidity.

Minerality, freshness, concentration and complexity on the nose and on the palate, without losing any finesse or authenticity. Fine tropical fruits reminiscent of Mirabelle plum, papaya and apricot nectar join juicy flavors of quince, blossoms and cool herbal essences. The interplay of complexity, extract and a lively exchange of sweetness and acidity reveal the tremendous potential of this Auslese from the Juffer Sonnenuhr.

Ratings & Reviews

96 Points - James Suckling:
"Smelling the nose of this wine is like walking into a room filled with vases of white flowers. Breathtaking concentration and purity of flavor on the incredibly precise palate. Normally a riesling Auslese is frankly sweet, but this aspect of the wine has been hidden, its sweetness at the back of the bottom drawer and forthrightly displays all its mineral beauty. Limited production. Drink or hold."  (Sep 2022)

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"This shows amazing complexity, and bursts with flavor, but with great purity and delineation. Dense and mouthcoating, but never heavy, it exudes violet, baked pineapple, vanilla spice and mineral aromas and flavors. It is all sewn into a succulent texture that adds to the intrigue. The finish is kaleidoscopic and almost ethereal. You can drink it now, but better to wait at least 10 years." (Sep 2023)
