The success of Baker & Hamilton, the well-known dealers in farming implements and machines and all kinds of hardware, illustrates the truth of the saying that energy and enterprise always bring their reward. — The St. Helena Star, October 1874. Vine Hill Ranch borrowed the name for this bottling as a nod to Oakville's agricultural history.

Baker & Hamilton is effectively the second wine of the Vine Hill Ranch estate, sourced entirely from the Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard in Oakville, Napa Valley. Grapes are hand-sorted and aged in French oak for approximately 9 months, then blended and returned to barrel for an additional 12 months before bottling.

Ratings & Reviews

96 Points - James Suckling:
"Lush and fruit-driven aromas of blood plums, black currants, mocha, blueberry compote, licorice, potpourri and spices. The palate is textural and rounded, with fine tannins, bright acidity and a fruit-driven and complex finish. This is Vine Hill Ranch's second label. Drink or hold." (RM) (Jan 2026)

95 Points - Decanter:
"The Baker & Hamilton Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is a powerful, beautifully built wine in this cool, impressively balanced vintage. Full-bodied and driven by red and black cherry fruit, it delivers deliciously juicy dark fruit layered with sagebrush spice and elegant cedarwood notes. The tannins are muscular yet refined, gathering momentum and building through the finish. 2026 - 2044." (JC) (Mar 2026)

94 Points - International Wine Review:
"The 2023 Baker & Hamilton Cabernet reveals enticing aromas of ripe blackberry and dark cherry layered with hints of boysenberry. As it opens, subtle notes of exotic spice, pencil shavings, delicate wildflowers, and a touch of vanilla bean emerge. On the palate, the wine is rich and full-bodied, showing both depth and precision. Lush dark fruit flavors are supported by lively acidity and a thread of minerality, leading to a lingering finish accented by warm spice. With its structure and balance, this Cabernet is well positioned to gain added nuance and complexity as it matures over the coming decade."

94 Points - Vinous:
"The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon from Baker & Hamilton is fabulous. Medium in body and beautifully layered, the 2023 graces the palate with lovely red/purplish-toned fruit lifted by soaring floral aromatics. Time in the glass releases hints of lavender, cinnamon and new leather. Fine-grained tannins round things out in style. This supremely elegant Cabernet Sauvignon is irresistibly sexy. 2026-2038." (AG)

93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2023 Baker & Hamilton is the second wine of Vine Hill Ranch and remains a standout value, offering red and black fruits, leather, toasted spice, graphite, and well-integrated spicy oak that's going to scratch any Napa Cabernet Sauvignon itch you might have. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully balanced, it has background notes of tobacco and a subtle garrigue-like nuance, and it has the complexity and length to make it a serious wine in its own right. Drink 2025-2040."

93 Points - Wine Advocate:
"This 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is something of a second label for Vine Hill Ranch, incorporating more benchland and fewer hillside parcels, as well as some young vine material. It's focused on national distribution rather than direct to consumer, so readers may find it out there in the wild, perhaps at upscale steakhouses and the like. Cherries are joined by gentle herbal nuances and a hint of vanilla in this medium- to full-bodied wine. It's still structured and firm, like its big brother, but with slightly less depth and richness. Given the quality and provenance, it provides reasonable value. 2026 - 2035." (JC)

92 Points - Wine Spectator:
Menthol, black currant paste, smoldering earth and savory notes deliver a textbook Oakville profile, while engaging juiciness and polished tannins give this a scaled down and approachable feel. Drink now through 2033. 1,747 cases made.
