About the Winery:
The unwavering dedication of the Gallo family to vineyards and wine dates back over a century and is rooted in the labor and determination of family members over three generations. Gianfranco, who has managed the estate since 1978, introduced radical viticultural programs and has devoted painstaking attention to winemaking practices; these initiatives have given the stamp of unique personality to the wines of Vie di Romans over the last 30 years, making them some of the most premier wines in the entire peninsula. The 57 hectares of vineyards are located in a niche microclimate that benefits from soil rich in alluvial fans and minerals that have been carried there by glaciers over the millennia, as well as, the Bora winds from the east that result in large, daily temperature fluctuations.
About this wine:
Aged in French oak barrique – 9 months sur lie
Tasting notes: Slightly pink color (ramato style). The nose is fine, with delicate notes of crushed flowers, sweet red berries, peach and a hint of citrus fruit. On the palate it is fresh with a full body and some tannins that add persistence and structure.
Food pairing: Ideal with sophisticated recipes like Risotto alla Milanese or heavier foods such as crepes and soufflés. Perfect also with seafood and grilled fish.
Ratings & Reviews92 Points - Wine Spectator:
A ramato-style Pinot Grigio, this is a light, tawny pink hue, with a subtle chalkiness to the texture as it carries a rich range of baked apricot, dried white cherry and salted Marcona almond flavors, revealing accents of vanilla, singed orange peel and dried lemon thyme. Boasts bright acidity that buoys the expressive flavor profile through to the lingering, creamy finish. Drink now through 2030. 1,500 cases made, 500 cases imported.
92 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"From two separate parcels, this food-friendly single-vineyard Pinot Grigio spends nine months on the lees and at least another eight in bottle. It has a delicate strawberry scent bolstered by an intense, saline and mineral mouthful of spicy melon, pear, apple and apricot skin." - James Button (Jan 2023)
90 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2021 Pinot Grigio Dessimis lifts from the glass with exotic florals, sweet spices and peach. This opens with a burst of inner sweetness, complicated by zesty acidity and mineral tones, as a vivid note of ripe pear evolves on the palate. This finishes classically dry and slightly grippy, leaving nuances of white strawberry and rosy inner florals to linger. The 2021 is amore mellow edition of Dessimis, yet enjoyable all the same." - Eric Guido (Apr 2023)
