About the Winery:
Venica & Venica is a family owned estate with 28 ha of vines in the Dolegna district of Collio. Originally established in 1930 when Daniele Venica purchased Ronco del Cero, today the winery is one of Friuli's most well known and respected estates.  Giampaolo now has taken over the estate from his father Gianni and uncle Giorgio.  The winery is known for highly textural and aromatic whites that use little to no wood in the production of their wines.  Varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Malvasia, Ribolla Gialla, Traminer and Chardonnay are planted to white wine production.  Varieties of Refosco, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are planted to red wine production.

About This Wine:

Collio Pinot Grigio: a pleasant, easy-drinking, fresh, playful wine with a wide matchability and which is especially suitable for everyday consumption. These characteristics have certainly contributed to the wide diffusion of this wine throughout the world, with particularly high success in the USA and the UK.

Also known as Pinot Gris and coming from Alsace, it spread all over the globe and is today considered an “international” grape. It is the first Italian still white wine in terms of export volumes and Italy is the largest producer in the world in terms of cultivated hectares of vines, located mainly in the Triveneto area in the North-east.

This variety was born from a genetic mutation of the most celebrated Pinot Noir, which led to a change in the color of its grapes. In fact, despite its wide diffusion, few know that Pinot Grigio is a gray berry grape: its bunches have a gray-pink color tending to purplish. And this is why the resulting wine takes wonderful coppery hues if processed with a light maceration on the skins.

The vineyard “Jesera”, from which our Pinot Grigio takes its name, is located inside the DOC Collio.

Tasting Notes:

Color: The shade varies depending on the vintage; this year it is pleasantly coppery.

Nose: It is fresh and lively on the nose, with a floral bouquet, hints of yellow peach and light mineral notes.

Palate: On the palate it is enveloping, fresh and savoury sensations are perceived. The fruity notes return and it closes in the mouth with a good minerality.

To be paired with: Starters and canapés, especially ham, light soups, grilled fish and white meat.

Wine Making

Alcohol: 13,5%
Total acidity: 4.9%
Vinification | Aging
After harvesting, the grapes are then macerated for 4 to 8 hours at a temperature of 14°C directly in the presses, protected from oxygen with innovative systems by recycling their fermentation carbonic in order to reduce the intake of antioxidants. The must ferments and matures on the lees for 6 months partly in large wooden barrels of 20/27 HL and part in steel containers.

Ratings & Reviews:

91 Points - Decanter Magazine (2021):
"Giampaolo Venica, the 4th generation vintner, produced a ramato-style Pinot Grigio with texture, mouthfeel, and phenolics. White flowers, spiced pear, and star anise lead on the nose, with ginger and spice continuing on the palate. Consider this a Pinot Grigio, but with character. To be enjoyed as a showstopping aperitif wine or paired with vegetarian cuisine." (Nov 2022)
