Notes from the Winemaker:

Grapes:
Sangiovese Grosso 100% from “Vigna Spuntali”, a vineyard situated on the southwestern and warmest side of Montalcino, at a height of approximately 300 meters a.s.l. It is the oldest geological area of Montalcino, offering moderately loose-packed soil with areas containing sand and vulcanic lapilli. On the seafront, it reaps the advantages of a special microclimate that brings out the strong points of Sangiovese, making it particularly rich, structured, fruity and mature.

Tasting Notes:
Color: Intense ruby red, purple with aging
Aroma: Complex and very elegant, with generous fruit, with spicy richness, hints of chocolate
Taste: Great balance and body; very long finish. A full and powerful expression of Sangiovese Grosso
Food pairing: Excellent with game, grilled and roast meat and cheese

Frementation:
It ferments in cement vats for approximately 20 days at a temperature of approximately 25/ 30°C. After a 24 month maturation in 300-L French oak barrels it undergoes at least 24 months of bottle aging.

Production: Only in the best vintages, we produce about 15.000 bottles (i.e. 1.250 9 Lt. cases) and 500 magnum bottles

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali is a thick and brooding wine with high fruit definition and luscious layers of dark berry flavors. This is a beautifully executed wine that offers a great deal of elegance and power thanks to the polished and sophisticated nature of its aromatic components. Cherry, tobacco and dark chocolate are all heavily on display. The mouth offers firmness and good grip with lasting spice and dark fruit." - Monica Larner (Feb 2015)

92 Points - James Suckling:
"Pretty and sexy with dried berries, spices, cedar and dried mushrooms. Tangy acidity buttresses the dried fruits. Firm tannins. Drink now."- (August 10th, 2015)

91 Points - Stephen Tanzer:
"Bright red. Expressive aromas of red plum, ripe red cherry, mocha, loam and leather. Sweet, broad and pliant, with good weight to its very ripe red fruit and spice flavors. The persistent, ripely tannic finish offers lingering notes of coffee and orange peel complicated by repeating nuances of loam and sweet spices. A very forward style of Brunello that is utterly irresistible; the Spuntali vineyard is located in Montalcino's southeastern sector not far from Sant'Angelo in Colle, and this wine is very faithful both to that specific production area and to the many outstanding older Spuntali wines. I should note that for all of its easygoing charm and ripe delivery of fruit, Spuntali Brunellos age remarkably well: for example, the 1998 and 2000 (neither one a memorable vintage in Montalcino), though full of easy-drinking charm, still have a long life ahead." - Ian D'Agata (July 2014)

91 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:

"Marked by new oak, this is spicy, with sweet cherry, smoke, tar and tobacco flavors underneath. Balanced toward the dense, muscular side, finishing fresh and long. Best from 2018 through 2026. 830 cases made." - BS (Jul 31, 2015)

Wine Enthusiast:
"Reflecting the heat of the vintage, aromas recall stewed prune, fig and toasted oak. The hearty but one-dimensional palate delivers dried berry, roasted coffee bean, vanilla and anisette alongside raspy, mouth-puckering tannins. Searing alcohol dominates the finish." - Kerin O’Keefe (5/1/2015)
