About this winery:
The Valdicava property lies on a high plane close to Montalcino. Wines from this area have as their signature characteristics a great balance between body and perfume. The winery dates back to 1953 when Bramante Abbruzzese was offered the opportunity to return to the property in Montalcino where his ancestors were sharecroppers centuries before. Today grandson Vincenzo Abbruzzese runs the show, producing up to 6000 cases each year with no chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

Here's what reviewer Antonio Galloni has to say about this winery:
"Proprietor Vincenzo Abbruzzese makes some of the richest Brunellos readers will come across. The straight Brunello is a blend of the estate's parcels, while the Madonna del Piano is a single-vineyard wine. Both Brunellos are aged in cask. In the cellar, the young wines always exude notable class and personality."

One of the very first single-vineyard Brunellos, the Valdicava Madonna del Piano very much set the standard for cru Brunello. Organically grown and meticulously produced, Valdicava Brunello have made a reputation for elegant, suave, velvety Brunello, wines that have won the hearts of wine-lovers around the globe. This is a wine about which reviewer James Suckling has said "Valdicava’s single vineyard Brunello di Montalcino Madonna del Piano is one of the great wines of Tuscany, if not Italy. It is a wine completely based on great soil and climate, not to mention fabulous viticulture from owner Vincenzo Abbruzzese. The wine always shows dark fruits and a fresh porcini character, both young and old. It’s structured and tannic yet polished and reserved. It is an archetypal Brunello di Montalcino for me."

Ratings & Reviews

98 Points - James Suckling:
"A complex red with rose petals, violets, crushed stones and cherries follows through to a full body and chewy tannins that are poised and polished. Extremely long and intense. A top wine for the vintage. This needs three or four years, maybe more, to come together." (Apr 20, 2018)

96 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"This is opulent and powerful, offering black cherry, black currant, plum, leather, iron and tobacco flavors boosted by the racy acidity. Overall, this feels firm and complex, with a long finish. Not your typical style from the northern part of the Brunello di Montalcino zone, yet compelling. Best from 2022 through 2038. 650 cases made." - BS (Jun 30, 2018)

95+ Points - Vinous Media:
"Deep ruby-red. Toasty oak and vanilla complicate red cherry and underbrush aromas and flavors. Then rich, dense and concentrated, but lovely violet lift provides clarity and cut to the suave flavors of red cherry, red currant, flint and vanilla. Much deeper and richer than the 2013 Brunello from Valdicava, this beautiful wine finishes very long and ultra-smooth. It is the best wine I have ever had from this estate." - Ian D'Agata (Apr 2018)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a dark and thickly extracted expression. It is one of the blackest Brunellos you will find in this report. This rich red wine takes a little longer to open because those primary aromas are buried deep under all that bulk and power. Indeed, this wine is almost too much of a good thing. It moves with slow-motion laziness, and the bouquet is in absolutely no rush to show what it has in store. At its leisure, it will deliver dried blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, spice, campfire ash and sticky tar. There is some tannic astringency that will (hopefully) integrate with time. This is a hearty and satisfying wine to drink in the heart of winter with gentle snowflakes fluttering outside your window. It is a romantic wine in heart and soul." - Monica Larner (Feb 28, 2018)

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Earthy aromas of thyme, truffle, scorched earth and dark berry pave the way. The forward concentrated palate offers ripe black plum, pipe tobacco, licorice and a touch of nutmeg set against firm tannins. Drink from 2022–2029." - Kerin O'Keefe (5/1/2018)
