About this winery:
The Valdicava property lies on a high plane close to Montalcino. Wines from this area have as their signature characteristics a great balance between body and perfume. The winery dates back to 1953 when Bramante Abbruzzese was offered the opportunity to return to the property in Montalcino where his ancestors were sharecroppers centuries before. Today grandson Vincenzo Abbruzzese runs the show, producing up to 6000 cases each year with no chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

Here's what reviewer Antonio Galloni has to say about this winery:
"Proprietor Vincenzo Abbruzzese makes some of the richest Brunellos readers will come across. The straight Brunello is a blend of the estate's parcels, while the Madonna del Piano is a single-vineyard wine. Both Brunellos are aged in cask. In the cellar, the young wines always exude notable class and personality."

One of the very first single-vineyard Brunellos, the Valdicava Madonna del Piano very much set the standard for cru Brunello. Organically grown and meticulously produced, Valdicava Brunello have made a reputation for elegant, suave, velvety Brunello, wines that have won the hearts of wine-lovers around the globe. This cru Brunello Riserva is always a knockout, and the ripe, seductive ’09 vintage makes it approachable earlier than usual.

Tasting Notes

Rich, succulent fruit sit first and foremost in this Brunello Riserva, but the wine’s secondary notes of cigar wrapper, saddle leather, earth, baking spices and potpourri offer compelling cameos. Silky, lush and seductive, this ’09 Riserva is a knockout.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is an expressive and articulate wine that speaks highly of Sangiovese and the Montalcino territory. The wine offers a pristine narrative of both grape and place with crystalline aromas of cherry, blackberry, spice, leather, smoke and Mediterranean herb. The bouquet peels back one delicious layer at a time. The mouthfeel is similarly successful with deep concentration and complexity. It imparts soft layers of dried fruit and velvety tannins. Endnotes of espresso bean and toasted almond add length and momentum. There's even spot of chewy sweetness that is typical of the warm 2009 vintage." - Monica Larner (Feb 2015)

94 Points - James Suckling:
"This is the wine of the vintage with dark berry, chocolate, spice and mushroom character. Full body, silky and beautiful tannins and a long, long finish. A beautiful wine. Drink or hold."  (Aug 10, 2015)

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Aromas of sweet, ripe cherry and strawberry are accented by woodsy and floral notes in this elegant, refreshing red. Firm yet harmonious, with a lingering finish of leather, tobacco and underbrush. Drink now through 2024. 1,300 cases made." – BS (Jul 31, 2015)

92 Points - Vinous Media:
"Cedar, smoke, tobacco, licorice, dark cherries and plums meld together in the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Maddona del Piano. It is amazing to see just how much the Valdicava wines have changed over the last ten years or so. A decade ago, the Madonna del Piano was black, inky and impenetrable, but in 2009 it is a pretty classic wine. The flavor profile is full of Sangiovese signatures, while there is still quite a bit of the typical Valdicava richness in the glass. This is a terrific effort for a very challenging year." - Antonio Galloni (Feb 2015)
