About this Winery:
Uccelliera is without any doubt one of the top estates of Montalcino, producing Brunello and Rosso that are complex, intense, extremely supple and drinkable. The Uccelliera estate was at once part of neighboring Ciacci Piccolomini until 1986, when winemaker Andrea Cortonesi purchased it from his friends and former employers; his first vintage was 1991. To produce Brunello and Rosso by blending vineyards with different exposures and soils is a specific choice so that the character of each vintage and of the terroir can be expressed following a "minimum handling" philosophy. The wines have quickly become cult favorites amongst the cognoscenti.
- 100% Sangiovese from clay and sand soils rich in minerals
- Made from younger Brunello di Montalcino vineyards
- Cold maceration with the skins at 10-12 degrees Celsius
- Fermentation and maceration with the skins for 18/20 days with pumping over of the must in steel vats with temperature control
- Malolactic fermentation in steel followed by maturation in oak casks and barrels of various capacity for 10 months
- Finishing in the bottle for 5 months
VINTAGE REPORT
A mild winter with moderate rainfalls followed by an unexpected drop in temperatures during spring time that was responsible of some vegetative trauma, producing less and smaller bunches.
The warm and dry summer, with occasional precipitations, contained the vegetative growth. Rainfall in mid-August favoured a good development of the berries and a well-balanced phenolic ripening. The optimal diurnal temperature variation and good weather conditions during the harvest allowed to pick healthy bunches rich in aromatic complexity.
Ratings & Reviews
92+ Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino entices with a whiff of mint leaf and sage before giving way to crushed black cherries, clove and white smoke. This shows the ripeness of the vintage in a beautifully balanced package, with mineral-laced red and blue fruits that swirl across textures of pure silk. It finishes incredibly long, repeating its mineral strength. Sweet tannins linger through the violet-tinged finale. The 2022 is an understated beauty. (Drink between 2025-2035)" - Eric Guido (Sept 2024)
92 Points - Decanter:
Andrea Cortonesi’s reputation for Brunello continues to grow, but the Rosso remains under the radar. This traditionally made wine has a rich, spicy nose with plenty of tomato puree and black cherry. The palate is firm and structured, with bags of tannins, showing good acidity and chew. It should continue to develop well over the next four to six years. Bold, gutsy, crowdpleasing and thoroughly Tuscan, this is a wine for the famous cucina povera – dishes with beans and oil, and fat-spiked meats.
91 Points - James Suckling:
"I like the juiciness and tension from this Rosso, which also shows ripeness from berry and cherry fruit. A touch of iron and spices at the same time. Fine grained on the palate, with a medium to full body and a pretty long finish. There is gravity from the tannins. Drinkable now, but can hold well for the next few years." - James Suckling (Aug 2024)
90 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"A ripe red color, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino is a potent little Rosso on the nose, with notes of wild cherries, anise, and pine needles. Medium-bodied, with good structure, it’s showing the warmth of the vintage, with modest acidity. but it retains good freshness in spite of that. It’s a very charming wine to enjoy over the next 2-3 years.
Located in Castelnuova dell’Abate, Uccelliera’s first vintage was in 1991. Andrea Cortonesi purchased the farmland in 1986, and he continues to operate the estate today. His philosophy is simply to respect the terroir and to hold a strong commitment to the sense of place. He believes in a homeopathic approach to viticulture, to observe, listen, and work together with nature. The property includes vineyard holdings in three areas that range from 150 to 350 meters in elevation. They utilize large Slavonian 40-hectoliter barrels as well as 225-liter French barrique. 90 Points - Wine Spectator:
Rich and packed with cherry, plum, earth and iron flavors. Shows muscle and dense, dusty tannins for support. Nicely balanced. Drink now through 2032. 5,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.
