Notes from the Winemaker:

Our first Pinot Noir, the Twomey Russian River Valley Pinot, was crafted to showcase the deep and bold flavors only found in the Russian River Valley AVA.

Originally sourced from the Westpin Vineyard, our first vintages—2002, 2003 and 2004—were produced from two acres of Martini clone—the only acres that were not replanted after we entered our long-term lease in 2000. The inaugural 2002 vintage was also made at the Silver Oak Napa Valley Winery in Oakville.

Vintage:

From a memorable vintage, the 2022 Twomey Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is a harmonious wine with great balance and bright acidity.

25th Anniversary Label

This vintage features our limited-edition, commemorative label to celebrate 25 years of Twomey.

The 2022 season began with a welcomed increase in winter rains that refilled the groundwater reserves and set the grapevines up for producing healthy, strong canopies. Timely precipitation continued throughout spring and helped reinforce a balanced canopy architecture. Scattered warm days juxtaposed the long frost season, and inclement weather during flowering led to heterogeneous fruit set in certain areas. Yield was therefore slightly lower than typical with millerandage—tiny berries mixed in with larger ones—showing up in several areas, especially in some of the heritage selections of Pinot Noir. This type of cluster morphology results in beautiful tannin balance and elegant wines—two great descriptors for 2022.

Warmer weather built over the summer months, and the pace of ripening accelerated. With strong canopies and warm weather, ripening was quite even, and great flavor was apparent early on. Harvest began early on August 22 and wrapped up on September 9. This compressed window was a result of a strong Labor Day heat dome, and it was critical to harvest quickly to preserve freshness. September 9 is the earliest we have finished harvest for Russian River Valley, and there is a beautiful energy and freshness in the wine as a result.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir leads with classic notes of cherry and cola with grapefruit and cardamom. Broad and generous, and the layered tannin structure of the mid-palate leads to a lively, bright finish.

93 Points - James Suckling:
The 25th anniversary bottling of this Russian River Valley wine has beautiful, floral and cassis-like aromas, followed by a generous palate of black plums, black cherries and subtle pine and woodsy accents. Moderate tannins and a full body make for a mouth-filling and well-balanced expression. Drink or hold.

92 Points - Decanter:
One-third of the Pinot Noir grapes come from two sites in the Russian River Valley: Bailey and Pinot Hill vineyards. Two-thirds are from Twomey's 'Last Stop' estate in Russian River's Green Valley sub-appellation. The site is planted to heritage clones of Calera, Mt. Eden, Swan, and Burgundy Dijon clones. They developed a hillside in 2017, and they imported some clones from their Prince Hill property in Oregon, which they bought in 2017. Elegant red berry fruit is laced with vanilla and cedarwood. Emerging brown spices layer in nuance on this medium-bodied Pinot Noir, which boasts plenty of dark fruit concentration with plush textures and ripe tannins. There's a lovely floral lift on the finish.
