Notes from the Winemaker:
2021 marks another near-perfect vintage for Napa Valley. Early bud break led to a calm and steady growing season, which allowed for even ripening and generous hang time on vine. Lower yields due to drought brought about a true "winemaker's vintage," allowing for more time and attention to each lot. The resulting wines are aromatically rich, full bodied, concentrated in flavor, and perfectly age worthy.
"Notes of dusted blackberries, plum and cherry lead to a back-drift of toast and fleeting tobacco. Supple creamy tannins widen the dark fruit mid-palate, lending to a lifted and layered finish. This wine widens and rises in amplitude and velocity with elegance and balance, showcasing the incredible beauty of the 2021 vintage." - Winemaker Peter Heitz
“The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve is softer and more upfront compared to the Black Label, offering a terrific perfume of cassis and black raspberry fruits supported by spicy oak and violets. It too is perfectly balanced, has full-bodied richness, and tons of character. Drink bottles anytime over the coming 15 years.”
95 Points - Wine Spectator:
Displays showy flavors of boysenberry, blackberry and black currant preserves that stretch out beautifully over a polished structure, while flashes of warm loam, ganache, sweet bay and violet swirl through. Offers all that, plus a sense of freshness through the flamboyant finish. Drink now through 2042. 2,300 cases made.
95 Points - Int'l Wine Review:
The 2021 Turnbull Oakville Reserve is composed of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon along with a dash of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot which was sourced from Leopoldina (61%) and Fortuna (39%). It instantly begins to impress as it opens to alluring aromatics of ripe black currants, cassis and blueberries which come together with spices, graphite, dried herbs and spring florals that all develop beautifully in the glass. On the palate this possesses a full body, with a gorgeous voluptuous texture, supported by nicely integrated, well-polished tannins. It shows wonderful overall balance, structure and concentration through the long supple finish. While this is showing marvelous now, it should continue to offer drinking pleasure for years to come.
“The 2021 Oakville Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of blackberry preserves, blackcurrant pastilles, and candied violets pop from the glass, followed by hints of dark chocolate and star anise. The medium to full-bodied palate is soft, bright, and lively, finishing with pure black berry notes and a real skip in its step.”
94 Points - Vinous:
“The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve is fabulous. Once again, the Reserve is one of the most stellar wines in the range. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, leather and mocha build nicely as this juicy, exuber-ant Cabernet shows off its alluring personality. This is one of the best Napa Valley Cabernets readers can find at this price point. Superb.”
Blended from the estate's Leopoldina (61%) and Fortuna (39%) vineyards, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve represents a solid value. Marked by scents of cassis, black cherries and loamy earth, with a hint of smoked meat, it's full-bodied, plush and velvety, If it lacks the extra concentration of the Black Label, it's still excellent stuff, featuring a long finish lined with softly dusty tannins. Drink 2025-2040." (12/29/23)
A firm and rich cabernet with dark berries, bark, dried leaves, cola and sweet spices on the nose following through to a full body with creamy tannins and texture. Lush and structured with a juicy core of blackberries and cherries at the finish with a spicy touch as well. Better after 2025.
