The William Randell range of wines were created in honor of the family ancestor - the esteemed pioneer William Richard Randell (1824 - 1911). The wines are sourced solely from grapes grown on the family estate vineyards. Wines in this range are only made in exceptional vintages.
Appellation: Eden Valley
Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Following harvest the fruit was crushed into a variety of small fermenters (4 to 6T in capacity). Fermentation was carried out at a warm temperature (25-28 degrees). The ferments were manually pumped over to provide good control of tannin extraction. Each fermenter was treated as a separate parcel of wine and once dry was filled to French oak (40% new). Following malolactic fermentation the wines were racked and returned to the same oak. Parcels remained in barrel for an average of 18 months prior to blending. Only the best barrels from the multiple parcels were used to make the final blend. Once blended the wine was prepared for bottling.
Deep, inky red in color. Lifted blackcurrant and blackberry on the nose with hints of eucalypt. The palate shows depth and power with generous pure Cabernet fruit and supple, long tannins. Balanced French oak adds some savory spice to the wine. Will age well for many years.
Ratings & Reviews
"From the cool Milton Park and St Kitts Vineyards, destemmed, open-fermented, 10 days on skins, matured for 16 months in French hogsheads (35% new). The vintage was made to measure for cabernet in this district, the wine revelling in its full-bodied guise. Blackcurrant, black olive, dark chocolate and cedar sweep you along – relax and enjoy it." - (August 2020)
93 Points - Vinous:
"Saturated ruby. Expansive cassis, cherry and licorice aromas show very good clarity and pick up oak spice and vanilla notes with air. Sweet and broad on the palate, offering intense dark berry, bitter cherry and chewing tobacco flavors that tighten up on the back half. Youthfully taut and focused on the persistent finish, which features building tannins and lingering cherry and vanilla qualities. Drink between 2024-2034." -Josh Raynolds (12/1/21)
92 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"There's an ease and harmony to this wine in the form of blueberry, cherry, baking spice, violet and dried herbal aromas. It shows elegance on the palate and a silkiness to the fruit amidst Cab's inherent power. The tannins are supportive but not overwhelming and there's ample length. Drink now–2028." 91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Despite being matured in 40% new French oak for 18 months, the wood in the 2017 William Randell Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as remarkably balanced, with subtle shadings of cedar and baking spices gently framing mint and cassis. It's full-bodied and relatively expansive for an Australian Cabernet, with ripe tannins that turn softly dusty on the finish, where notes of maple syrup and cedar bring the oak home. It should drink well for at least a decade. Drink 2021-2030." - JC (2/26/21)
90 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Elegant and polished, with a distinctive floral overtone to the plum and kirsch flavors. Lush and rich, this shows off details of dark chocolate, black licorice and baking spices, finishing with a thread of cedar and firming tannins. Drink now through 2035. 275 cases made, 50 cases imported." - MW
