About this wine:

Nicolò Tedeschi founded the company that bears his name in the Valpolicella area in 1824. Throughout the years, his family has continued the traditional wine-making process, and today, the winery is owned by the fifth generation of Tedeschis: Antonietta, Sabrina and Riccardo.

2011 is the first vintage from Tedeschi's newest organic acquisition Maternigo (Mother land). It comes from the vineyard Impervio and is a blend of Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella. The Tedeschi family chose very well when they selected this site. It has a rich plum and black cherry aroma, that on the palate starts out fresh and lively but transforms in your mouth into a rich cheek sucking wine. A elegant balance of power and freshness that would be a wonderful accompaniment to a selection of aged cheeses.

Ratings & Reviews

90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Traditional in style and elegant, this is aromatic, with dried herb and floral notes, accented by graphite and spice. A balanced red, expressive without excessive weight. The fine-grained tannins are layered with flavors of mulberry, dried cherry, pekoe tea leaf and smoke. Drink now through 2021. 1,700 cases made." - AN (Dec 15, 2014)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2011 Valpolicella Superiore Maternigo is a darkly concentrated, almost brutish wine that drinks more like an Amarone than a simple Valpolicella Superiore. It opens to a seriously dark appearance and nervous aromas of dark fruit and Indian spice market. The mouthfeel is thickly layered and rich with a definite touch of sharpness to the tannin. Drink 2014-2019." - Monica Larner (Oct 2013)
