Overlooking the Pacific Ocean and surrounding Rosemary Talley’s home, Rosemary’s Vineyard is the coolest site at Talley Vineyards, has distinctive chalky shale soils and produces Pinot Noir marked by refreshing acidity. It yeilds Talley Vineyards most ageworthy and highly regarded wines.

Tasting Notes:

This wine presents aromas of white peach, oak moss and lily of the valley with flavors of Meyer lemon, dried coconut and candle wax. The mouthwatering acidity is oily and energetic on the palate.

Vintage Notes:
Rainfall for the 2022 season was 14 ½ inches or about 5 inches below average for the Arroyo Grande Valley. Overall warmth for the season placed it squarely between the warmer than average 2020 season and the exceptionally cool season of 2021. A mild winter with little frost resulted in early budbreak, which began in the Monte Sereno Vineyard the first week of February, about 2 weeks earlier than normal. This trend of two weeks early would continue throughout the season. Flowering began May 10 and verasion began during the week of June 20. The April through July period was marked by an average daily high temperature of 76 and nightly lows of 60. There were no extreme heat or cold events during this time frame and weather was ideal for all stages of fruit and vine development with very little mildew or botrytis pressure. Harvest began during the second week of August and concluded on October 20. As in previous years, a heat spike occurred during the first week of September with two days recording temperatures of 106. Due to excellent vine health and moisture status, and a small crop, no deleterious effects on the vines or fruit were observed. A freak rainstorm dropped 2 inches of rain during the third week of September. Fruit and vine handled the precipitation well because of open canopies and warm breezes that followed the rainfall. Yield was about 35% below average for Chardonnay and 25% below average for Pinot Noir. This was due to reduced cluster counts likely caused by the multi-year drought. The wines of 2022 reflect the excellent growing conditions and low yields of the season and are reminiscent of the wines produced in 2019 and 2016.

Ratings & Reviews

96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:

"Lastly, the 2022 Chardonnay Rosemary's Vineyard is another Arroyo Grande release that saw 14 months in 30% new French oak. It's a slightly more savory, masculine styled effort that has both citrus and stone fruits, lots of crushed stone minerality, honeyed white flowers, blanched almonds, and subtle spicy oak aromas and flavors. It has rock-solid concentration, bright yet integrated acidity, and a gorgeous finish. It's up with the finest Chardonnay in the vintage." - Jeb Dunnuck (Aug  2024)

95 Points - Decanter Magazine:

"A stunningly beautiful Chardonnay, the Rosemary's is from the coolest site, the cool Talley Estate. Planted in 1987 to complement the Pinot Noir planted across the estate driveway. Within three to five years, this wine will become ethereal. Beguiling aromatics of lemon verbena, English hawthorn and concentrated grilled fleshy pineapple with a kiss of herbaceous wild tarragon. The texture is extraordinary, and 14 months of sur lie elevage in 30% new French oak has imparted intense lemon curd flavours, lemon oil and grilled lemon peel. There's a soaring minerality marked by briny sea air, bright white pepper and savoury notes of cardamom mark the finish (Drink between 2024-2038)." - Clive Pursehouse (Apr 2024)

95 Points - Vinous Media:

"The 2022 Chardonnay Rosemary's Vineyard is another gorgeous Chardonnay from Brian Talley and his team. Complex and multi-dimensional, the Rosemary's is wonderfully dynamic from start to finish. Layers of rich orchard fruit intermingle with bright acids and light tropical accents that add raciness. I especially admire its complex, multi-dimensional personality. (Drink between 2024-2032)" - Antonio Galloni (Aug 2024)

94 Points - James Suckling:

"A generous, plush, delicious wine with ample baked-fruit flavors and spicy vanilla bean accents. Medium-bodied with energizing acidity and a lingering finish. Estate grown on the Talley family’s original vineyard site. Sustainable. Drink or hold." - JS (Aug 2024)

92 Points - Robert Parker:

"Aged for 14 months in 30% new French oak, the 2022 Chardonnay Rosemary's Vineyard splits the difference between a fresh, vibrant frame and toasty, punchy richness. The nose is reminiscent of a classic California Chardonnay, albeit with notably more verve and zest. The palate is powerful, yellow-fruited and creamy, leading to a finish that combines butterscotch-laden power with saline, stony refreshment." - Matthew Luczy (July 2024)
