Notes from the Winemaker:
The Sarmassa vineyard is located just below Cerequio, within the commune of Barolo. Planted in 1985, it is one of the oldest vineyards worked by Roberto Voerzio, with a density of slightly less than 2,000 vines per acre. The Nebbiolo grapes are harvested in late September-early October. After crushing, the must is macerated in contact with the skins for 10 days. The wine is aged in Allier barriques (1/3 new) for 26 months, followed by an additional 12 months in bottle.
Tasting Notes:
Sarmassa is a powerful wine that offers terrific aromas of spice, tobacco and mocha wrapped around multiple layers of currant, earth and oak. The finish is long, intricate and framed by firm yet velvety tannins. This wine is only produced in magnum bottles and is ideal for long aging. Another gem from Roberto Voerzio.
96 Points - Antonio Galloni:
"Usually a floral, lifted wine, the 2011 Barolo Sarmassa is quite intense and dark in this vintage. There is fabulous persistence, depth and pure staying power on the palate. Dark red and black stone fruits, sweet spices and leather unfurl on the glass as this sensual, exquisite Barolo shows off its personality. The 2011 Sarmassa is bold and beautiful to the core." - Antonio Galloni (November 2014)
94 Points - James Suckling:
"Very refined and beautiful with very fine tannins and berry character. Medium to full body, juicy fruit and a long and flavorful finish. Drink or hold." - (April 13, 2015)
92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Vanilla and sweet spice notes lead off, with cherry and strawberry flavors close behind. The solid backbone quickly shuts this down, but all the elements are in balance. Best from 2019 through 2032. 60 cases made." - BS (Mar 31, 2016)
