About the Winery:
With a history that dates back to the 1960s, Renato Ratti has long been an innovator of Barolos in the Piedmont region, where he developed new techniques for Italian wines such as in-bottle refinement. Active in writing the rules and regulations for Alba which include the coveted DOCG label, Renato Ratti was one of the prime movers in bringing the wines of Piedmont and Italy to international prominence. Today the reins rest in the hands of his son Pietro and his nephew Massimo Martinelli.
About this Wine:
Barolo is the absolute master of the table. It conquers the palate with the conviction of strength, harmony and fullness and holds its sway at length. Barolo Marcenasco has ancient origins. There are historical documents from the "Rigestum Comunis Albae" that bear witness to the cultivation of the Nebbiolo wine in the "Marcenascum" area already back in the 12th Century.Barolo Marcenasco is smooth, balanced, elegant and faithfully, best to drink between 6 to 12 years after the vintage.
100% Nebbiolo
A great wine for important dishes, red meats roasted on a spit or grilled, game, dishes of gourmet white and red meats and ripe cheeses. Garnet red. Fragrant with notes of licorice and tobacco. Full and elegant flavor.
Ratings & Reviews
97 Points - James Suckling:
"Assertive aromas of graphite, violets, mint and chalky minerality. A stunning, precise wine focused on elegance, with citrus flavors, a full body and lavish, velvety tannins supported by freshness. Long, youthful and savory aftertaste. Try from 2026, but best after 2030." (Jan 2025)
94 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2021 Barolo Marcenasco pours a reflective brick red color and offers a good deal of complexity and clarity on the nose, opening to notes of preserved orange, anise, cranberries, redcurrants, and minty herbs. The palate is similarly focused, with a refreshing energy and spine of acidity, well-defined and coiled tannins, and a zesty feel through the finish. It is a lovely wine from Ratti with a lot of personality that can age gracefully and improve over the coming 15 or more years. I would love to cover more of their wines in the future." - Audrey Frick (May 2025)
94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Macerated cherry and raspberry fruit is shaded by orange peel, iron and menthol flavors in this juicy red. Needs time to absorb the chewy tannins, with a mix of savory and fruity elements on the finish. Shows fine balance and length. Best from 2029 through 2048. 5,800 cases made, 5,800 cases imported." - Bruce Sanderson (Nov 2025)
92 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2021 Barolo Marcenasco is gorgeous. It offers a captivating mix of La Morra finesse and structure, a pretty appealing combination in my book. Macerated cherry, leather, rose petal, incense and orange peel lend shades of exoticism throughout. This is such a gorgeous edition of the Marcenasco." - Antonio Galloni (Sep 2025)
