About the Winery:
With a history that dates back to the 1960s, Renato Ratti has long been an innovator of Barolos in the Piedmont region, where he developed new techniques for Italian wines such as in-bottle refinement. Active in writing the rules and regulations for Alba which include the coveted DOCG label, Renato Ratti was one of the prime movers in bringing the wines of Piedmont and Italy to international prominence. Today the reins rest in the hands of his son Pietro and his nephew Massimo Martinelli.

About this wine:
Conca is one of the oldest and most exclusive MGAs (special mention areas) of the entire Barolo zone. Already known by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of the Most Holy Annunciation; a particular bluish land and special microclimate that – alone in the Langhe district – allows for the growth of the famous Anemone Coronarie (poppy anemone) with its unmistakable reddish purple color. The Conca vineyard is quite small in extension, approx. 7000 m2 and is situated below the Annunziata cellar.

Ratings & Reviews

97 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"One of the best Barolos of the vintage, this stunner opens with rose, forest berry, underbrush and new leather aromas. Drop dead gorgeous and just delicious, the full-bodied palate is loaded with flavor and finesse, featuring crushed raspberry, ripe red cherry, cake spice and licorice alongside taut, silky tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. While it's already fantastic, it also shows great aging potential. Drink 2024–2038."- Kerin O'Keefe (Sep 2022)

94 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The 2018 Barolo Conca is tight and beautifully intense with cassis, sour cherry, wild rose and blue lilac. The wine's inner fiber is fine and delicate, with slight aromas of spice, licorice and toast at the edges. Barolo Conca awards a lot of fine elegance and a long, polished finish." - Monica Larner (Aug 2022)

93 Points - James Suckling:
"Aromas of dried cherries with some spice and a hint of scorched orange rind. Medium-to full-bodied with a silky texture and an almost creamy mouth-feel. Intense, flavorful finish. The very fine tannins build a little towards the end. This has a lighter overall structure this year, but the intensity and focus and is not lacking. Try from 2024." (Feb 2022)

93 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Conca, one of the smallest vineyard plots in the Barolo zone (a little more than 2.4 hectares) is situated just below the Ratti winery in an amphitheater setting. Ratti’s Barolo from Conca displays the elegant tannins Annunziata is known for, but offers a flavour profile a bit more wild. Aromas of morello cherry, oregano and tobacco emerge, with very good acidity and impressive persistence." - Tom Hyland (Nov 2021)

90 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Broad and juicy, this reveals light plum, cherry and rose hip flavors, with accents of earth and eucalyptus. Firms up on the finish, so give this a year or two. Best from 2024 through 2038. 83 cases imported." - BS (Oct 2022)
