About the Winery:
David Ramey is unquestionably one of the most renowned winemakers in California. He has made wines and consulted for some of the top names in Napa Valley and France, including Chateau Pétrus (the world's most expensive Bordeaux), Chalk Hill, Matanzas Creek, Dominus Estate, and Rudd. Together with his wife Carla, he founded his namesake winery in 1996. The second generation, Claire and Alan Ramey, began working at the winery in 2013 and have been cross-trained in all aspects of winery operations. In 2021, Claire and Alan became co-presidents of Ramey Wine Cellars.
About this Wine:
Mountain Cabernet grown at the apex of Sonoma County, above Rockpile. Historic farmland overlooks Lake Sonoma with only a sliver planted to vines. The high elevation yields a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon of depth and grandeur.
The ranch, in its sixth generation of Cooley family ownership, is located in the wilderness above Lake Sonoma. Black bears, mountain lions, bobcats, eagles and deer roam its meadows and ravines, with oak, madrone, massive green boulders, and natural springs punctuating the landscape. Sitting above the marine layer, the Ramey block sits at 1,325 elevation, which informs the wine’s complexity and powerful tannins.
Varietal Composition: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Fermentation: Spontaneous, native-yeast and malolactic fermentations
Aging: Aging sur lies with bi-monthly bâtonnage coats the tannins and integrates the wood. The 2019 vintage matured 19 months in new French oak barrels (Taransaud). Non-filtered
Ratings & Reviews
96 Points - Vinous Meda:
"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Cooley Ranch is superb. Aromatic and vibrant in the glass, the 2019 offers up an exciting mix of dark red fruit, blood orange, mint, new leather, pomegranate and dried herbs. This site in the northern reaches of Sonoma County yields a Cabernet of tremendous distinction and class." – Antonio Galloni (Jan 2026)
95 Points - James Suckling:
"A cool, minty, structured wine that's rather floral and minerally on the nose, then shows gorgeous red and black fruit on the palate. Aged extra long in the bottle, the wine is now complex, integrated and ready to enjoy. Still firm in tannins but also generous in cedar, spearmint, raspberry and black cherry flavors. Drink now or hold." (Dec 2025)
