About the Winery:
Over the course of 300+ years, since 1716, Quinta do Vallado has been producing excellent wines in Portugal’s Douro Valley. It is one of the oldest and most famous wineries in all the Douro, started by the legendary Doña Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, and still belongs to the same family today. It is a sixth-generation winery, currently owned by João Ferreira Alvares Ribeiro and Francisco Ferreira. The estate produced Port wines exclusively, until the 1990’s when it expanded production into dry wines.

Vallado has 250 acres of its own vineyards in two sub-regions of the Douro. They are comprised 100-year-old field blend vines, single variety plots and certified organic vineyards. The terraced vineyards are hand-harvested with one row of vines trained to a double cordon trellising system, allowing for good drainage, air flow and erosion control.

Notes From the Winemaker:
TASTING NOTES: The intense nose offers complex aromas of resin and candied orange. The palate is concentrated with excellent structure, citrus-forward with notes of honey and iodine. Vibrant acidity follows through to a persistent finish.

VITICULTURE: The blend of Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and more come from old vines on Estate vineyards.

VINIFICATION: After hand-picking, destemming and crushing, sugar is added, and the resulting must is fermented in 600-liter oak barrels. The blend is aged for an average of 50 years.

GRAPE(S): a blend of Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, among others.

Ratings & Reviews

97 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Mellifluous, refined, with outstanding purity of expression. Blend components include an 1880 Tawny (8%) and a 70-year-old Tawny (2%). Translucent topaz in hue, with fragrant, spicy orange peel, silky caramelised orange and more complex crème catalana citrus, vanilla, cinnamon and fennel. Melt in the mouth milk chocolate praline flavours chime in. The sweetness is balanced by persistent acidity. Residual sugar is 137g/L and bottled in 2022." (Apr 2023)

96 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"This dark-colored tawny Port with its great age is more than a curiosity. It is a very fine, mahogany-polished wine, dense with a refined texture that gives such concentration and balances acidity with black raisins and concentration. Drink the wine now." - Roger Voss (May 2023)

95 Points - James Suckling:
"Fascinating combination of salted peanut, dried plums, figs, and toffee aromas follow through to a full body with lots of nutty character to the dried and rich fruits. Walnuts and burnt toffee. Very sweet at the end. Special tawny. Drink now." (Jan 2023)
