About the Winery:
Over the course of 300+ years, since 1716, Quinta do Vallado has been producing excellent wines in Portugal’s Douro Valley. It is one of the oldest and most famous wineries in all the Douro, started by the legendary Doña Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, and still belongs to the same family today. It is a sixth-generation winery, currently owned by João Ferreira Alvares Ribeiro and Francisco Ferreira. The estate produced Port wines exclusively, until the 1990’s when it expanded production into dry wines.

Vallado has 250 acres of its own vineyards in two sub-regions of the Douro. They are comprised 100-year-old field blend vines, single variety plots and certified organic vineyards. The terraced vineyards are hand-harvested with one row of vines trained to a double cordon trellising system, allowing for good drainage, air flow and erosion control.

Notes From the Winemaker:

The grapes come from vineyards controlled by Quinta do Vallado in Rio Torto. 20% of the field blend is aged for three years in toneis, traditional wooden barrels. The remaining 80% of the wine is aged in stainless steel vats.

Tasting Notes: The elegant nose combines fresh and concentrated aromas of black fruits and warm spices. The palate is well balanced with flavors of black cherries, supported by soft tannins and an intense, lingering finish.

SERVING HINTS: A late bottled vintage Port from the region is excellent when served on its own and also pairs well with blue cheese, nuts, and rich chocolate desserts.

Wine Composition: 100% Field Blend mix of grapes from old vineyards in the valley of Rio Torto
Alcohol: 20.5%
Total Acidity: 3.9 g/l
Residual Sugar: 90 g/l pH 3.82

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - James Suckling:
"This is more of a traditional LBV, aged for four years in cask and not filtered before bottling, so it gives you the sensation of vintage Port. It’s full and tannic with medium sweetness, giving you fruit and chewiness. Drinkable, but better in three to four years." (Jan 2023)

90 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The 2018 Late Bottled Vintage Port (LBV) is an unfiltered field blend from old vines aged for 36 months in all stainless steel this year. It comes in with 90 grams of residual sugar and a long cork. It was bottled in April 2022. Not quite the powerhouse, perhaps, that the 2017 was, this is still delightful because it is pure, fresh and friendly. The fruit is aromatic and full of flavor, the modest sugar not getting in the way much. This is a pleasure to drink and able to age a bit too. I'd drink it relatively young, though. I love that fruit now. There may be complexity to come if you wait." - Mark Squires (Aug 2022)

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"A smoothly textured wine, ready to drink. Its tannins are subservient to the dried black fruits and balance of acidity and sweetness. This is a immediate Port, ready to drink now." - RV
