About the Winery:
In 2007, Marilisa Allegrini (of the Veneto's esteemed Allegrini winery!) and Leonardo LoCascio (head of US importer Winebow) purchased the property, and brought in winemaker Nicola Biasi to build on San Polo's already considerable reputation and impressive levels of quality: Poggio San Polo's Brunello di Montalcino have consistently achieved outstanding ratings since the 1997 vintage.

The vineyards at San Polo were planted between 1990 and 2000 with the goal of making the highest quality Brunello di Montalcino. With an altitude of 1350 feet above sea level, their southern facing vineyard receives optimal sun exposure and is the highest in Montalcino. The vineyard also has natural terraces facing the stunning Sant'Antimo Valley and is entirely dedicated to Brunello di Montalcino.

Notes from the Winemaker:

Our Brunello from San Polo has a lengthy ageing potential and can further improve with extended bottle ageing. This is due both to the characteristics of the soils on which the grapes are grown - the calcareous content provides ideal conditions for Sangiovese - and the position of the vineyards on the beautiful hills at San Polo.

Tasting Notes:
Intense and bright ruby red with garnet highlights, this wine reveals typical aromas of violets and small red berries. There is a distinctive aroma of woodland undergrowth, aromatic wood and a light note of vanilla and preserved fruit, followed by subtle nuances of coffee. The nose is intense, persistent, broad and ethereal.

Ratings & Reviews

97 Points & #57 Top 100 Wines of Italy 2020 - James Suckling:
"A rich, layered red with blackberry and chocolate, as well as cured meat and wet-earth undertones. It’s full-bodied with depth, intensity, and focus. Lovely, velvety tannins and a long, creamy-textured mouth feel. Generous finish with tension. Better than 2015.” (11/2020)

96 Points - Wine Enthusiast:

"Aromas of underbrush, rose petal, new leather and wild mint shape the nose. The savory, elegantly structured palate shows ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and cinnamon framed in tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it radiant. Drink 2023–2036." KERIN O’KEEFE (5/1/2021)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The San Polo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino brings forth dark fruit, cherry, spice, integrated oak tones and balsam herb. This is a round and lightly textured Sangiovese with a long and polished finish. In fact, the mouthfeel delivers more in terms of length and persistence than it does density or richness. It offers a silky, almost glossy disposition that is colored by dried raspberry, wild cherry and blue flower. This wine represents a selection of the best fruit from across various parcels farmed by this estate." - Monica Larner (11/2020)

93 Points - Wine Spectator:

"Starting out with earthy, savory aromas, this red shows fleeting flavors of black currant and raspberry before settling back into notes of earth, iron and juniper. Firm, dusty tannins guard the finish. Best from 2025 through 2045. 1,100 cases imported." – BS (June 30, 2021)

93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is highly aromatic with sweet cherry fruit, aniseed, fresh flowers, and tomato leaf. The palate is brisk with fresh tea leaf, orange zest, and tart raspberry. It is medium-bodied with a drying tannic structure. Approachable and polished, you should feel welcome to open this now or over the next 10-15 years. 2021-2035" (3/4/2021)
