About the Winery:
Bolgheri, 1999.  Here our passion for wine led to Podere Sapaio, a 40-hectare farming estate gently stretching between Castagneto Carducci and Bibbona.

Our plats of land extend over quaternary and flood deposits and consist of coarse sandy beds and draining calcareous soils.

Here we grow our vines, above all of Bordeaux origin, which have become a reference in the area over the past 50 years, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.  Some hectares have been dedicated to olive groves, in the varieties Fratoiano, Moraiolo, and Leccino.

About the Wine:
A Bolgheri Rosso DOC since 2004.  14 months in barrique barrels and 6 months in bottles.  Like Sapaio, the name exalts the local origin of this wine by expressing respect for the vine Volpola.

Volpolo is an opulent Super Tuscan-style wine primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon along with a smaller quantity of Merlot and Petit Verdot. Succulent plum and dark berries dominate on the nose along with hints of warm winter spice and toast from the 14 months of ageing in French oak barrels. On the palate there is a generous full body complemented by ripe, smooth tannins and a powerful structure. A great wine to serve with hearty red meat dishes or to keep in the cellar for a few more years.

Varietal Composion:
70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - International Wine Report:
"The Podere Sapaio 'Volpolo' is a beautiful blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot & Petit Verdot. It has a dark, inky purple color, and instantly begins to impress as it opens to alluring aromatics of ripe blackberries, dark currants and black cherry, and cassis which come together with crushed stone, black olive, leather, fresh herbs and dried flowers that all develop beautifully in the glass. On the palate this possesses a full body, with a gorgeous voluptuous texture, supported by nicely integrated acidity and chewy, mouthcoating tannins. It shows wonderful overall balance, structure and concentration through the long supple finish. Delicious now, and should continue to drink well for more than a decade.  Drink 2021-2031." -MD (1/2021)

93 Points - James Suckling:
"Complex aromas of currants, plums, sweet tobacco and cedar follow through to a medium to full body. Round and fruity with tension and brightness. Citrus undertone. From organically grown grapes. Needs a good two or three years to come together. Try after 2022 minimum." (7/20/2020)

92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2018 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo is an organic blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot aged in barrique for 14 months. This vintage saw cool temperatures in the spring and warmed up considerably toward the end of the ripening season. This Tuscan blend reveals dark fruit and cherry with mild spice and tobacco. There is a nice informality to this wine, something you might pair with a plate of polpette (meatballs) in tomato sauce, and although the palate shows moderate intensity and length, this vintage delivers an accessible and easy-drinking treat from the coast of Tuscany." -Monica Larner (12/2020)
