About the Winery:
Gavin Newsom and Gordon Getty established PlumpJack Winery in 1995, naming the property after one of Shakespeare's most memorable characters, Sir John "PlumpJack" Falstaff. PlumpJack's down-to-earth, fun-loving, irreverent nature shows in their wines. In 2005, John Conover, Gavin Newsom and Gordon Getty founded CADE Estate Winery on Howell Mountain as a complement to the valley floor terroir of PlumpJack Winery. Like PlumpJack, CADE takes its name from Shakespeare, who used the term to refer to the wine casks -or cades- used to transport wine from Bordeaux to England in Elizabethan times. The  Odette estate, located in Stag's Leap, was planted in 2015.

The Estate grapes were cold soaked for a period of 3-4 days and then fermented up to a maximum temperature of 94 degrees. The wines were drained off the skins after a total maceration of 7 – 12 days. The wine was then racked to barrel to undergo malolactic fermentation and to age. This wine was aged in 100% French oak barrels, 80% of which were new. The coopers used were primarily Sylvain, Taransaud, Cavin, and Nadalie. The cooperage is a blend of medium, medium-plus, and heavy toast barrels from a variety of forests. This blend of coopers, forests, and toasts lends the wine more layers and aromatic complexity.

Blend:
88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot
Production: 3,190 cases

Tasting Notes

The warm growing season gave this wine it’s rich and dark character. The nose is filled with black cherry, blackberry, cassis, and fig, which is perfectly complimented by the classic PlumpJack sage and mint. The palate is silky upon entry and opens up to juicy blackberry and black cherry. The balanced acid and well-integrated tannin give this wine energy and length and leads to a beautiful raspberry and spice finish.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"
Moving to the two Cabernet releases, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is based on 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec and the rest Petit Verdot, all from Oakville fruit. Promising yet restrained notes of ripe currants, tobacco leaf, sharpened #2 pencils, and chocolate give way to a full-bodied Cabernet that has sweet tannins, a layered, elegant texture, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This rich, concentrated 2018 can be drunk today with ample pleasure or cellared for 15-20 years or more." - Jeb Dunnuck (1/27/2021)

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"
Composed of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate displays a deep garnet-purple color and fragrant notes of Black Forest cake, crème de cassis and wild blueberries with nuances of red roses, Chinese five spice, camphor and black olive plus a hint of charcoal. Full-bodied, the decadently rich fruit has impressive freshness lifting the palate along with firm, finely grained tannins, finishing long and fragrant." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Nov 5, 2020)
