About the Winery:
Planeta’s journey began at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate owned by the family since the 1600s. Here, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, under the guidance of Diego Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Planeta today encompasses six distinct wine estates in five regions across Sicily; Ulmo at Sambuca di Sicilia, Dispensa at Menfi, Dorilli at Vittoria, Buonivini at Noto, Sciara Nuova on Etna at Castiglione di Sicilia, and the newest addition, La Baronia at Capo Milazzo. Each vineyard site is carefully cultivated with grapes that best compliment the local terroir.

About the Wine:
A great white wine able to compete with the great whites of the world: this is the initial project. For this reason, in the 90s, experimentation began on Fiano, a noble and ancient variety of Campania origin. This is how Comet was born, which best expresses, in an original and unique way, the characteristics of this extraordinary grape variety. Intense and fruity aromas, its great structure and minerality make it today one of the reference white wines of Southern Italy, produced according to the criteria of sustainability and organic.

After manual harvesting, the grapes are crushed and destemmed and sent to the press. The must thus obtained ferments in steel for 90% and for 10% in 225 liter barriques. After a period of aging on the lees, it is blended and prepared for bottling.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Pure Fiano from calcareous-clayey soils that help to enhance the aromatic markers of Mediterranean scrub typical of this vine.

Nose: Thus, between the broom flower and thyme, you can trace delicate scents of chamomile, hay, mango and pomelo. Mineral palate with traces of vibrant flavor that shake and quench thirst.

Palate: Then the rhythm changes to become slower and more harmonious, an invitation to sip this author's white wine with the right calm, fully enjoying every nuance. The finish gives a silky tactile sensation with a very refined aftertaste of ripe apricots, almond blossoms and basil leaf.

Ratings & Reviews:

93 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2021 Cometa opens with a honeyed sweetness, complicated by dried apricots and peaches and then enriched by a hint of sweet butter. This is distinctly savory in style, with silken textures and masses of mineral-tinged orchard fruits that slowly saturate. The 2021 finishes perfumed and long, leaving sour melon and sweet herbal tones to resonate. There is so much to like about this varietal Fiano. It’s a wine of lovely contrasts. Eric Guido (Sep 2023)

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"A warm sweetness defines the nose, which has notes of honeysuckle, quince paste, cooked apple and banana. On the palate, there's a rich, nutty banana bread, with overtones of citrus zest and salt providing pop. A delicious and comforting, yet structured, wine. – Danielle Callegari (Dec 2023)

91 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Sleek and well-knit, this is long and mouthwatering, with a subtle streak of salinity underscoring flavors of poached apricot, pineapple and persimmon, chopped almond and saffron. Lightly chalky in texture on the lingering finish. Fiano. Drink now through 2029. 4,833 cases made, 250 cases imported. – AN (Feb 2024)

91 Points - James Suckling:
"Juicy and tropical, with notes of papaya, mango stone, lemon curd, flowers and almonds. It's medium-bodied with a fleshy, slightly oily texture. Excellent concentration and density. Fiano. Drink now. (Aug 2022)
