About the Winery:
The Pio Cesare winery was founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio, one of the very first wine producers to believe in the great potential and quality of Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and other great wines of Piemonte. For five generations, the Pio Cesare family has been producing traditional Piemontese wines in its ancient cellars, and consistently receiving high scores from all reviewers. Today it is run by the genial Pio Boffa, great-grandson of Pio Cesare, his nephew Cesare Benvenuto, and, since 2016, Boffa’s daughter Federica, who represents the fifth generation.
Notes from the Winemaker:
From 3 micro-zones located in the highest part of the vineyards owned by us at Cascina Il Bricco in Treiso. The "Il Bricco" vineyard is characterized by a very high altitude and a cooler climate.
Winemaking: Made of steel. Maceration on the skins for about 30 days at rather high temperatures.
Ageing: In French and Slavonian oak barrels for about 30 months and a small part in barriques.
Tasting Notes:
Powerful and structured, rich in ripe fruit, soft, spicy. Sweet and ripe tannins. Of very long life. Produced in very small quantities every year.
Ratings & Reviews:
97 Points - James Suckling
"A solid and powerful Barbaresco with fantastic depth of fruit and layers of tannins. Full and so deep and focused, with great length and structure. Bark, berry, mineral and deep terroir and gravitas. Try after 2027."
93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
"There is a more depth to the 2019 Barbaresco Il Bricco, although it is equally potent in its expressive perfume of licorice, leather, turned soil, and wild berries. Medium-bodied, with more ripeness, depth, and purity in its notes of red berries, tea leaf, and turned earth, it is long and persistent and has a great finish with present tannins. Drink over the next 12-15 years. This is all about perfume and incense."
