About the Winery:

In 1889 Pierre Moncuit and his wife, Odile Moncuit-Delos, established the house of Champagne Pierre Moncuit. Since 1977, Nicole Moncuit has managed the vineyards and made the wine, while her brother Yves has managed the sales. More recently, Nicole’s daughter Valérie has been actively assisting in the cellar. Mesnil lies smack in the middle of the Côte des Blancs and is its most celebrated village. The wines of Mesnil are known above all for steely elegance and minerality, and those from chez Pierre Moncuit—which has some of the oldest vines along the entire Côte—superbly reflect these qualities.

The Moncuit siblings own 15 hectares of vines surrounding Mesnil, mostly old vines that average 30 years of age. Their high percentage of old rootstock is a rarity in Champagne, where vines are routinely replanted once they reach their 25th birthday.

100% Chardonnay sourced from the Cote de Sezanne just south of the Cote des Blancs, the Hugues de Coulmet is single vintage cuvee that spends 24 months sur lie prior to release. It is an exceptional value and a great starter to any meal

24-30 months sur lattes; Dosage 7 g/L; Disgorgement May 2025

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - James Suckling:
A fresh blanc de blancs with lemon, apricot and white-flower aromas, as well as some salty biscuit. It's fresh, elegant and balanced, with soft bubbles and a fruity, rounded finish. Chardonnay from Cotes de Sezanne, based on 2019. 7g/L dosage. Drink now.

91 Points - Wine Spectator:
Aromatic, with apple blossom and honey notes, this shows a creamy mousse carrying the flavors of glazed apricot, biscuit, pickled ginger and fleur de sel. Well-knit, with a lively finish. 3,300 cases made, 400 cases imported.

91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:

The Pierre Moncuit NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Hugues de Coulmet is sourced entirely from the estate’s roughly dozen acres in the Cote de Sezanne. Scents of fresh apple and lemon that set the tone for this bottling’s juicy, tart-edged and delicate palate impression are alluringly garlanded with honeysuckle and jasmine. An umami-rich and mouthwatering evocation of salted, sauteed shitake mushrooms along with piquancy of toasted hickory nuts make for a long finish that renders the next sip irresistible; and eight grams of residual sugar are well-suited to this cuvee’s efficacious acidity. It should give great pleasure over the coming couple of years, though I would not want to miss out on its current performance.

91 Points - Vinous:
The NV (2020) Brut Blanc de Blancs Coulmet, from vines in Sézanne, is soft, open-knit and gracious, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Baked apple tart, apricot, dried flowers and spice are all beautifully laced together. This is such a pretty and alluring Champagne. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged: May 2025; multiple disgorgements throughout the year.
