About the Winery:
In 1889 Pierre Moncuit and his wife, Odile Moncuit-Delos, established the house of Champagne Pierre Moncuit. Since 1977, Nicole Moncuit has managed the vineyards and made the wine, while her brother Yves has managed the sales. More recently, Nicole’s daughter Valérie has been actively assisting in the cellar. Mesnil lies smack in the middle of the Côte des Blancs and is its most celebrated village. The wines of Mesnil are known above all for steely elegance and minerality, and those from chez Pierre Moncuit—which has some of the oldest vines along the entire Côte—superbly reflect these qualities.
The Moncuit siblings own 15 hectares of vines surrounding Mesnil, mostly old vines that average 30 years of age. Their high percentage of old rootstock is a rarity in Champagne, where vines are routinely replanted once they reach their 25th birthday.
100% Chardonnay from the family's grand cru vineyards in Le Mesnil. Dosage is 9 grams/liter. Very mineraled release, where the terroir of Le Mesnil really comes through. We smell the chalk, then lurking underneath, plenty of concentrated fruit including grapefruit and an exotic pineapple note.
Ratings & Reviews
"Crisp and delicious with sliced-apple, lemon, jasmine and lychee character on both the nose and palate. Medium-bodied. Medium fruit with a subtle candied-apple and lemon aftertaste. Three years on the lees. 100% chardonnay. Dosage 7 g/L. Disgorged February 2025. Drink now." (Jul 2025)
93 Points - Wine & Spirits:
"Moncuit’s wines are all from single villages and single years—this one from the family’s parcels in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and the 2016 vintage. Fermented spontaneously in stainless steel, it is markedly tense and holds a lot of energy in its structure, even though it underwent malolactic conversion. There’s an elegant earthiness in its spring-meadow scent, like Queen Anne’s lace, and a note of green tea that extends through flavors of lemons and tangy orange. Cool and refreshing." (Dec 2020)
"The latest rendition of Moncuit's NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is very successful, wafting from the glass with notes of lemon oil, green apple, wheat toast and fresh peach, followed by a medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural palate that's quite fruit-driven this year, with a broad attack, an open-knit but nicely incisive core and a precise finish. The year has lent the wine an unusually extroverted personality, but it remains true to its roots. (WK)
"From grand cru vineyards in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, this beautiful, ripe wine is on top form. Great minerality mingles with some bottle age, fruit and toast in harmony. This rich bottling is ready to drink." - Roger Voss (Dec 2020)
