About the Winery:
It has been said that in partnership, the result is harmony. Through a lifetime of building relationships in the vineyards of Burgundy, Pierre Meurgey has proven this a steadfast rule. A native Burgundian, fourth generation wine trader, and former director of operations of a well-known négociant in Beaune, Pierre enjoys friendships with the top vintners and vineyard managers in Burgundy to source the finest grapes for his two labels Pierre Meurgey and Meurgey-Croses.
About this Wine:
Les Echards: These terroirs are worthy of carrying the appellation Village from the southern village of the Côte de Nuits (Corgoloin) to the northern (Fixin). Both red (Pinot Noir) and white (Chardonnay) wines may claim the appellation. Wines that derive wholly from a single Climat may add that name on the label.
Vinification: Fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. Aged in 228-litre oak barrels. 100% malolactic fermentation. Unfined before bottling.
100% Pinot Noir
Vineyard age : 35 years old
Exposure : Southeast
Soil : Clay and limestone
Alcohol : 13.5%
Ratings & Reviews
92 Points - Wine Spectator:
“A silky, elegant red, this displays cherry, currant, sandalwood, earth, wood smoke and sweet spice flavors. Balanced and approachable now yet will be better in a year or two. Best from 2026 through 2040. 48 cases made, 25 cases imported.” – Bruce Sanderson (Nov 2024)
89-91 Points - Vinous Media:
“The 2022 Volnay Les Echards comes from purchased fruit that Pierre Meurgey started buying in 2020 and, according to him, tends to create Volnay with good weight. Meurgey controls the harvest for this cuvée. The impactful nose offers vivid black cherry and blueberry fruit and fine delineation…très Volnay. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, plump but with a decent Pommard-like backbone with a gentle and cohesive finish. This is a delightful Volnay in the making.” - Neal Martin (Jan 2024)
