About the Domaine:
For almost five hundred years, the Philipponnat family has left its mark on the soil of the Champagne region. Generations have cultivated the land at Ay, the family's home since the time of Apvril le Philipponnat who owned vines at Le Léon, between Ay and Dizy, in 1522. In the 16th century, the family’s ancestors were winegrowers and merchants, suppliers to the court of Louis XIV, magistrates and Royal Mayors of Ay - a town which was directly dependent on the Crown since the era of the Counts of Champagne.
Philipponnat was the first Champagne House to indicate the main year used in its non-vintage blends, the dosage and the date of disgorgement on back labels, informing consumers and wine experts of the characteristics of each cuvée.
Tasting Notes:
A deep gold in color with amber glints in the glass. The first nose reveals vine blossom, linden and fresh, lightly toasted bread. Then comes aromas of summer berries, citrus fruit and honey. The mouth is fruity (redcurrant, raspberry, ripe grape) and full- bodied with light notes of biscuit and freshly baked bread on the
finish.
Food Pairing:
As an aperitif, served chilled but not ice-cold (8°C). Enhances hot or cold white meats, poultry and premium charcuterie. An ideal complement to cold buffets, fish and seafood.
Technical Information
The Blend:65% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Meunier. First press juice of mainly Grand and Premier Crus grapes from the heart of the Champagne wine-growing area. 20 to 30% of reserve wines are aged in wooden barrels using the solera system to incorporate older wines without losing freshness.
Vinification:
Vinified using traditional methods to avoid premature oxidation. Partial malolactic fermentation and reserve wines aged in casks to allow the aromas to develop complexity. Moderate dosage (8 g/litre) to maintain a balance between freshness, fruitiness and vinosity without masking the wine’s character and purity.
Ageing:
Aged on the lees in the House’s cellars at a constant temperature of 12°C for three years, far longer than the legal minimum requirement of 15 months.
Ratings & Reviews
92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The NV Champagne Reserve Perpetuelle Brut is a bright straw color and is from the 2021 base vintage. Beginning with this release, they have changed the name of this cuvée to better reflect the method of production, which utilizes their perpetual reserve as a key component in the blend, although it’s the same as it’s always been. Made from 66% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, and the rest Meunier, the nose is inviting and pure, with gorgeous red fruits that shine brightly in this release, and while it has intensity, it’s approachable and pretty, with notes of almond, peaches, red berries, and fresh bread. The mousse is elegant and integrates nicely into the wine. Drink now or over the coming 6-8 years. Disgorged in January 2025. 8 grams per liter dosage." - Audrey Frick (Dec 2025)
92 Points - Wine Spectator:
"A baseline of chalky minerality supports juicy pear and white cherry fruit, lemon peel and pickled ginger alongside rich accents of crystallized honey and biscuit in this sleek and creamy Champagne. Harmonious and finely knit, with good length through the lightly spiced finish. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Drink now through 2030. 5,000 cases made, 100 cases imported." - Alison Napjus (Dec 2025)
92 Points - James Suckling:
"Lemons, almonds, raspberries and sourdough on the nose of this fresh and fine Champagne. It’s medium-bodied, bright and nicely structured. 66% pinot noir, 32% chardonnay and 2% meunier. Made from base vintage 2021 with 56% reserve wines using a perpetual blend started in 1946. 8 g/L dosage. Drink now." (Jul 2025)
90 Points - Wine Advocate:
"Comprising 44% wine from the 2021 vintage and 56% reserve wines held in perpetual reserve, Philipponnat’s NV Réserve Perpétuelle Brut—formerly known as Brut Royale Réserve—opens with an inviting bouquet of ripe peach, red berries, pear and pastry. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, broad-shouldered and textural, delivering a generous, enveloping style energized by racy acidity. While the base vintage is vinified primarily in stainless steel, the reserve wines are stored in oak, and the wine undergoes partial malolactic fermentation. This bottling was disgorged in December 2024 with a dosage of eight grams per liter.)" - Kristaps Karklins (Jul 2025)
89 Points - Vinous Media:
"The NV Brut Réserve Perpetuelle is bright and focused. Kirsch, dried lemon peel, pear, mint and dried flowers are nicely delineated in this mid-weigjht offering. Hints of spice and a kiss of French oak, along with the dosage of 8 grams per liter, support the creamy, expansive finish. Disgorged: November 2024." - Antonio Galloni (Apr 2025)
