About the Winery:
Founded in 1830, Champagne Philippe Gonet is located in the heart Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, next door to Salon and a few steps away from Clos du Mesnil. The 19 hectares of family vineyards are divided among 45 parcels. Chardonnay is the Gonet family’s selected grape variety with one-third of their holdings in Le Mesnil. Stunning lots in La Chapelle-Monthodon, Vertus, and Le Breuil produce their Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
In 1977, following a request from a loyal customer, Philippe Gonet created the Pierre Cellier line from the Gonet estate vineyards naming it in honor of his first born son, Pierre, and his wife’s maiden name. The request was for a younger, more approachable, fruit-driven style with value in mind. With two years on the lees before disgorgement and seven grams dosage, this small project has only recently become available in the U.S.
About this Wine:
Named in Honor of Louis XIV (The Sun King) this cuvee was first produced in 2003. Made from Grand Cru vineyards exclusively from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Pair with the finer things: lobster, oysters, smoked salmon, truffle, caviar, or an expressive, creamy cow’s milk cheese.
Tasting Notes:
The delicate and elegant nose opens up to candied fruit (citrus, apricot) and gingerbread. Its woody forest bouquet develops with finesse unveiling a multitude of remarkable aromas. Its attack is mouth-filling, dominated by ripe citrus. This champagne offers a lovely freshness and a lasting finish worthy of the best wines.
Points & Reviews
92 Points - Allen Meadows' Burghound:
"Roy Soleil" Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Red) A more discreet nose somewhat grudgingly displays it aromas of Granny Smith apples, just sliced citrus, hints of yeast and a similar wisp of quinine. There is excellent volume to the utterly delicious middle weight flavors that are supported by a generous effervescence while displaying solid length on the moderately dry finish that offers better depth. Even so, this too could benefit from a few years of keeping. Worth considering." (Jun 2024)
