About the Winery:
Scavino’s approach to both viticulture and winemaking has always been aimed at preserving and enhancing the unique expressions of each of their vineyard sites. And while winemaking at the estate has evolved—including Enrico’s time ushering in a new wave of style and enthusiasm for the appellation as one of the ‘Barolo Boy’s’— one constant, even from the days of Enrica and Elisa’s grandfather Paolo, remains the cleanliness of the winery and health of the grapes.
Nebbiolo from the top performing plots of 8 single vineyards in the village of Castiglione Falletto (Rocche Moriondino, Vignolo and Pernanno vineyards), Barolo (Albarella, Terlo and Vignane vineyards) and Serralunga d’Alba (San Bernardo and Cerretta vineyard)
Maceration and fermentation in stainless steel and oak cask with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic fermentation in oak barrels
Aged 20 months in large French casks
3 months in stainless steel and 14-16 months in bottle prior to release
Approximately 3000 cases produced annually
Ratings & Reviews
94 Points - Wine Advocate:
"To be released in January 2025, the Paolo Scavino 2021 Barolo is bright and vivid, showing the focus and character of the vintage. This sample is still quite tight, and the tannins are firmly knit. However, the tannins are more elegant and silkier in the 2021 compared to 2020. I recommend giving this wine more time in bottle to allow it to fully flesh out." - Monica Larner (Jan 2025)
93 Points - James Suckling:
"Restrained and compact nose with vibrant violets and dried cherries, refreshed by pomegranate and oak bark. Full-bodied on the palate with a sold backbone of tannins that turn dusty and drier on the finish. Crisp acidity and an austere aftertaste. Try from 2027." (Jan 2025)
93 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Lacy and elegant, yet with ample tannins for structure, featuring rose, strawberry, cherry and mineral aromas and flavors. Pure and focused, this red stays in the red fruit spectrum through the long finish. Shows excellent balance in its youthful way. Best from 2028 through 2045." - Bruce Sanderson (Apr 2025)
92 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"From nine sites spread throughout the villages of Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, Serralunga and Monforte, Scavino's classic Barolo isn't crafted simply for accessibility. It is, perhaps, more immediately harmonious than the MGA bottlings. Entrancing aromas combine truffle, orange and potting soil, with intense violet as it opens. Heftier and fuller than the nose suggests, the palate demonstrates ample fruit ripeness and lots of chalky tannins. Satisfyingly confident in its grip, the tangy finish echoes all the wine's innate prettiness." - Michela Morris (Jan 2025)
91+ Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2021 Barolo pours a bright red hue and offers a floral perfume of fresh roses, tarragon, ripe cherries, and cedar. It's compact and medium-bodied, with a refined feel, snappy acidity, mouthwatering salinity, and well-defined tannins. It offers a more nervous and structured energy at this early tasting and will only benefit from another 6-12 months in bottle. Overall, it feels more precise in this vintage and worth having several bottles to check in on. Drink 2025-2040." (May 2025)
90 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2021 Barolo is a terrific entry-level offering from Scavino. Crushed flowers, spice and dried herbs give this mid-weight, juicy Barolo striking aromatic presence. Soft and silky on the palate, with racy, forward fruit, the 2021 is a delight. Drink it over the next handful of years." - Antonio Galloni (Jan 2025)
