About the Winery:
St Nikolaus-Hospital - the Cusanusstift - is the oldest estate in the Middle Mosel region, founded in 1458 by Cardinal Nikolaus Cusanus von Kues. Von Kues was one of the greatest polymaths of his time: he was a philosopher, natural scientist, Bishop of Brixen, Cardinal and deputy of the Pope. Achim Kerpen, grandmaster of Riesling and one of the Mosel's most recognized Riesling makers, is in charge of the winery's 19 acres of prime vineyard sites including Bernkasteler Badstube, Brauneberger Juffer and Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr, Bernkasteler Lay, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, and Graacher Domprobst. Numerous national and international awards reflect the high quality of the wines from the St. Nikolaus Hospital winery.

Notes from the Winemaker:
The vineyard for this wine is facing the small town of Wehlen, located in the middle of a long steep curved slate slope on the Mosel, with a south-southwest exposure. It consists of 0.7 hectares (1.7 acres) and the soil type is light Devonian slate; the name "Sonnenuhr" means sundial and reflects the large amount of sunshine the area receives.

Tasting Notes

The 2015 St. Nikolaus Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese has a great golden color with a concentrated peach flavor with hints of pineapple and tropical fruits. The finish is very long and intense.

The wine exhibits a fresh fruity bouquet of peach and apricots with honey and spicy notes. Strong, sweet and long flavors. Elegant, full bodied and luscious wine with good minerality and acidity on the palate.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"I loved the 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese, which comes from the oldest estate in the middle Mosel region. It offers a vibrant, racy, medium to full-bodied style that carries beautifully pure white peach, lime, sugared mint, and honeyed mineral aromas and flavors. It’s textured and rich, yet beautifully balanced and vibrant." (3/27/2019)

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Spice and saffron notes introduce this lavishly fruity sun-kissed wine. Pristine stone-fruit and pineapple flavors are delightfully plump but balanced in sweetness and jolted by shocks of lemon-lime acidity. This is gorgeously penetrating through a long lingering finish." - AI (10/2017)
