About the Winery:
Newton was founded in 1977 by English businessman Peter Newton and his Chinese wife Su Hua. Peter Newton was already renowned as a pioneer of winemaking in the Napa Valley, having founded the Sterling Winery near Calistoga in the 1960s. The Newtons transformed one square mile of rolling hillside in Spring Mountain into one of the Napa Valley’s most prestigious estates, whose wines have graced the official dinners of several US presidents.
The Newton estate encompasses 170 acres of prime Napa Valley terroir, distributed over four separate, wholly owned vineyards: Spring Mountain, Yountville, Mount Veeder and Carneros.
Newton is renowned for producing wines that are uniquely characterful expressions of varietals emblematic of the Napa Valley, notably Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Working patiently with nature, we are committed to precision viticulture and winemaking techniques yielding wines that are acclaimed for their balance, harmony and full, abundant flavors.
Notes from the Winemaker:
Instantly appealing with abundant blueberry fruit with beetroot, couverture, licorice and black olives. The palate is soft rich and round with dark chocolate, satsuma plums and creme de cassis providing a plump and fleshy middle balanced by a creamy, savory and fine velvety structure with great persistence with layers of flavor and texture.
Vineyard
Established in 1973 on the lower slopes and foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains directly above the town of Yountville in the heart of the Napa Valley region. This celebrated site is unique in the combination of alluvial valley floor and rocky foothills with a predominantly eastern aspect at between 150-350 feet in altitude. The principle moderating influence on the local climate is the heavy fogs that linger until late in the morning providing a cooling influence as it flows south down the valley to the San Pablo Bay. The wines represent classical Napa Cabernet with rich bold and round flavors, dark chocolate and a silky rich mouth filling structure.
The 2014 Yountville was a selection of blocks 304, 311, 312 with an average vine age of 18 years. Once harvested, the grapes were hand-sorted to inspect individual berries. The must was then fermented in separate lots and barrel aged for 12 months before being blended and returned to barrel for further maturation. 740 cases produced.
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Yountville sports a deep garnet-purple color and is scented of blackberry preserves, cassis and preserved plums with a very spicy undercurrent of cinnamon toast and fired Indian spices plus wafts of bay leaf and cigar box. Medium to full-bodied and built like a brick house, the palate gives firm, chewy tannins and seamless freshness, supporting the berry preserves and spicy layers, finishing with great persistence." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Oct 2017)
95 Points - James Suckling:
"A wonderful young Napa cab with ultra-fine tannins that go on for minutes. Lots of licorice, mint and blackcurrant character. Medium to full body. Reserve and refined finish. Better in 2018." (Jan 2017)
93 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"The vineyard that supplies these grapes is a mix of alluvial valley floor and rocky soil. This super-plush, all-Cabernet cuvée has the plummy, chocolatey overtones and soft, velvety tannins that people expect from Napa Cab." - Elin McCoy (Mar 2018)
