About the Winery:
Montes is the maker of Alpha M, Folly, Purple Angel and more; this winery BEAT Opus One, First Growth Bordeaux Haut-Brion, Chateau Montelena and Sassicaia in Blind Tastings!
Here is what Robert Parker's Wine Advocate had to say about this winery:
"Chile has made enormous progress in recent years. At present, this South American country produces wines that can satisfy any consumer's desires, from cheap quaffing wines to world-class age worthy reds."
- Jay Miller, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Oct. 2008)
Montes Folly is a pure Syrah grown on the very steepest slopes of the winery's "la Finca de Apalta" vineyard, in Apalta Valley, with an inclination exceeding 45°. These high reaches are home to the superb grapes that become Montes Folly, Chile's first ultra-premium Syrah.
Notes from the Winemaker:
Great density and structure with deep ruby red colour. Defined presence of mature dark fruits (berrie´s marmelade) and cassis with perfectly integrated vanilla notes (coming from the best selection of French new oak barrels). The wine is mouth filling, velvety and robust at the same time. Dense. In the mouth there are layers of ripe black fruit, black cherries and ripe plums, beautifully integrated with the smokiness typically from Syrah. Mouthfilling and lengthy. In all ways, unique wine that has become a cult wine.
Ratings & Reviews
93 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Dense, large-scale wine, with thick layers of blackberry, boysenberry, mocha and espresso flavors supported by lush, powerful tannins. Big, smoky, tarry finish. The oak is dominant now, but the stuffing is certainly here. One for the cellar. Syrah. Best from 2007 through 2011. 1,200 cases made." – JM (Nov 30, 2005)
92 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Super dark; almost black like night. This is big-boned New World Syrah from the Apalta Vineyard, and the aromas of violets and cherry are appealing. Big in the mouth, with bracing acidity and a lot of spare tannin. Very chewy and ripe, with vivid fruit. You won't find other wines like this; it's one of a kind. Imported by T.G.I.C. Importers." - Michael Schachner (3/1/2006)
