About the Winery:
The first documentary evidence of Grünhaus, then called “Villa ad Valles,” dates from February 6, 966. Emperor Otto I, heir of Charlemagne, confirmed a donation that had been made in the Seventh century by the Frankish King Dagobert. At that time, the buildings, vineyards and surrounding land had been given to the Benedictine monastery of Saint Maximin in Trier. In 1882, it was purchased by an ancestor of Carl von Schubert, who is the fifth generation of his family to own the Grünhaus estate.
About the Wine:
The Herrenberg vineyard is abundant with red slate, as well as a deep topsoil which retains water. The grapes hail from vines averaging 40 years of age, and when they reach Kabinett level ripeness they are harvested manually. After harvest the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in old Fuder casks.
Aromatically the wine the wine has notes of lemonade and lime zest, as well as fresh cute daisy's and salty sea air. The palate with smooth with honeyed peaches and balancing, lingering acidity.
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"The 2022 Herrenberg Kabinett is an exhilarating wine — vibrant and hauntingly complex aromatics of crushed stone, smoky flint and tingly white peach flesh. Sweet, fleshy lychee flavours combine with honeyed apricot and beeswax to show a deep richness lifted by notes of mint, savoury hints of salinity and spicy cardamom." - Clive Pursehouse (Jun 2023)
95 Points - James Suckling:
"This ravishingly beautiful riesling Kabinett wants you to keep smelling its aromas of red-fleshed vineyard peach, red apple and fresh thyme. Still very youthful, but that only adds to the charm. Great balances of ripeness and mountain freshness, the stunning finish as bright as it is silky. Drink or hold." - Stuart Piggot (Aug 2023)
93 Points - Wine & Spirits:
"The Herrenberg is the von Schubert estate’s largest holding. The vineyard has a myriad of microclimates, and the Kabinett is selected from the cooler portion of the site. This wineshows a compelling spectrum of prickly pears and tea—truly an ideal sushi wine." (Apr 2024)
92 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2022 Riesling Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Kabinett still shows yeasty reduction, but a passion fruit notion escapes, as does lemony verve. The palate sprays with lemon freshness, and the sweetness boosts the lemon vividly. This fills the mouth and mind with its sharp, citric intensity, making the mouth water with lemon zestiness and racy fun. Vivid, juicy, light and bright with a medium finish. (Medium) (Drink between 2023-2050)." - Anne Krebiehl (Oct 2023)
92 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Distinctive and delicious, showing green apple, lychee and roasted agave flavors flecked with notes of chamomile, green herbs and white pepper. This white's sweetness is well integrated on the densely packed palate through the creamy, lingering and energetic finish. Drink now through 2035. 400 cases made, 233 cases imported." - Kristen Bieler (Jun 2024)
