About the winery:
The Veglio family has been dedicated to working the land for generations. Since the beginning of the 1900s in the village of Ciotto near La Morra, they have been cultivating vines, orchards, gardens, and raising livestock. Today, the winery produces 100,000 bottles from about 23 hectares of vineyards distributed throughout La Morra and Monforte d’Alba. The family believes in making balanced wines, respecting the land and its characteristics of origin, with attentive work in the vineyard and just as much care taken in the cellars.

Notes from the Winemaker:
This vineyard extends between the Manocino and Lirano MGAs. Vinification takes place in large barrels and the resulting wine has unique and distinctive characteristics compared to the Barolo wines of La Morra.

The soil is characterised by an abundance of limestone and grey marl, alternating with sandy substrates. These qualities give our Barolo di Serralunga very recognisable qualities denoted by intense and complex aromas, an important structure and a marked, herbaceous tannic texture.

Variety: 100% Nebbiolo

Age of vineyards: Planted in the early 1970s

Vine training system: guyot

Vinification: Destemming operations that did not involve crushing brought almost whole grapes into the tanks. Cold maceration begins within 36-48 hours, followed by alcoholic fermentation, with a few daily pumping overs to ensure slow and delicate extractions. Maceration in contact with the skins lasts for about 20-25 days; malolactic fermentation is then followed. Aging for 24 months in large 25-hl French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Light ruby red color.

Aroma: Fruity hints of dark cherry as well as ferrous, balsamic and spicy notes.

Flavor: The mouth uncovers hints of dark fruit and cherry, supported by a lively and young tannic texture that suggests potential for evolution.

Serving temperature: 16°-18°. It is particularly enjoyable to savor its initial freshness and then appreciate the evolution of its aromas as the wine slowly warms in the glass.

Evolution: Drinking well already, but with the potential to evolve over the next 20 years.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - James Suckling:
"Fresh, succulent and crunchy with red currants, cherries, dried herbs and sweet spices. Medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins and bright acidity. Seductive, vivid and racy with a textural finish. Try after 2027." (Feb 2024)

93 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2020 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is a blend of two sites in the village. Dark and evocative, the 2020 offers up a complex mélange of savory herbs, blood orange, balsamic-infused fruit, spice and new leather. This beguiling, nuanced Barolo hits all the right notes. The mix of finesse and power in reserve is alluring, to say the least." Drink 2025-2035. - Antonio Galloni (Jan 2024)

92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The medium ruby 2020 Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D'Alba opens to notes of crushed stones, ripe cherries, clove spice, and incense. Approachable for the commune in this vintage, it’s ripe but light on its feet, with ripe tannins and mineral undercurrents. It’s a very appealing appellation wine to drink over the coming 8-10 years. Drink 2025-2035." (May 2024)
