About This Wine

After working a harvest in Champagne at the age of 22, Gianni Masciarelli was convinced he could make world-class wine in his home of Abruzzo. He knew to do this, he was going to have to work differently than the others in the region and think differently about the land. His first revolutionary step was an extreme focus on the vineyard and the land. While others were squeezing as much yield per hectare as possible, Gianni dropped vine production so all of the plant’s energy could be concentrated on less fruit, thereby producing higher quality grapes. In addition to reduced yields, Gianni also farmed all the land organically, thus preserving the vineyards and the heritage of his winery for the future.

Tasting Notes

A deviation from the norm for Masciarelli, as the Villa Gemma Bianco is a blend rather than a varietal bottling. Predominantly Trebbiano d'Abruzzo as well as the native Cococciola and Pecorino grapes, this wine is lithe and pure. Fermented in stainless steel and with little bottle aging before release, it shows bright citrus and jasmine aromas while picking up stone fruit and a slight spiciness on the palate. Quickly this wine is becoming one of the most exciting wines in the Masciarelli range and is designed to be drunk young.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - James Suckling:
“This is very tangy and intense with a milk, yogurt and sliced apple character buttressing the ripe apple. Full body. Flavorful and delicious. Drink now.” (October 20, 2017)

Antonio Galloni's Vinous:
“Pale straw. Aromas of lemon, lime and white flowers are simple and fresh. Tight and crisp, with a firm edge to the flavors of pear, spearmint and yellow apple that are complicated by a lovely saline tang. Finishes medium-long, clean and juciy, with a mildly herbal nuance. Makes for an uncomplicated drink full of early appeal.” - Ian D’Agata (Jun 2017)

Wine Spectator Magazine:
“This light-bodied white is structured by firm, lip-smacking acidity and offers a zesty profile of Meyer lemon, melon rind, smoke and spice notes. Modest finish. Trebbiano, Cococciola and Pecorino. Drink now. 1,040 cases imported.” –AN (Web Only - 2017)
