About the Winery:
The estate of Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio has a long and illustrious history in Piemont, and it is unequivocally one of the greatest Barolo producers. This traditionally-styled winery's origins date back to the mid-1800s, when Giuseppe Mascarello made a name for himself managing the vineyards of other landowners, and which ultimately culminated in the purchase of his own vineyards and cellars in 1881 in the village of Monforte d'Alba.
Mauro Mascarello has been the winemaker for the Giuseppe Mascarello estate since the late 1960s, succeeding his father, Giuseppe, and his grandfather, Maurizio, both legends in their time. And like them, Mauro is a traditionalist dedicated to long fermentations and aging in old botti. But Mauro has also made important changes, not the least of which was the creation of a single Barolo from the great Monprivato vineyard in 1970. Prior to that year, his family had always made their towering Barolos and Barolo Riservas by blending Monprivato fruit with grapes from other sites.Ratings & Reviews

"I can't get enough Freisa, so I'm always happy to visit those producers who still make wine from this often forgotten grape. The Mascarello family's 2016 Langhe Freisa Toetto is made from just half a hectare of vines in Castiglione Falletto. Part of this site has now been replanted to Nebbiolo, and that means that only 3,000 to 4,000 bottles of Friesa are produced each year. Great care is taken in winemaking. Delicate pump-overs are done instead of punch-downs. The results are fresh, vibrant and teaming with wild berry flavors. The finish adds spicy sensations and fresh acidity that keeps the persistence long. What the wine lacks in complexity, it offers in terms of ease in drinking." - Monica Larner (Jun 2018)

"The 2016 Giuseppe Mascarello & Figlio Freisa Langhe Toetto is still very young and austere, and unless one has acquired a taste for young Freisas, probably tough going right now, but it showed very pure strawberry aromas and flavors nicely framed by mineral nuances and citrusy acidity that speak of a long, healthy life ahead.
