In 1847 Edward Lear had a long journey in Calabria. He wrote in a diary where he described his impressions about the Palizzi area and drew beautiful Calabrian landscapes. During his stay in Palizzi he drank and enjoyed the red wine which still today is the pride and rarity of Calabria.

It is a wine delicately fruity and spicy, good structure and tannic. It is an excellent accompaniment to typical local dishes like bread guastedde, ragu with macaroni and pecorino or ricotta salata, spit roast, wild boar sausage and aged pecorino.

Grape Varieties: Calabrese Nero (50%), Nocera (50%)

Wine Details:
Color: deep ruby red

Aromas: Intense, mature red fruits and spices and hints of vanilla

Taste: Full, structured, warm and with good persistence, slightly tannic with spicy notes

Pairs well with: Pork ragu sauce, roasted lamb, sausage.

Production Area: Palizzi, Reggio Calabria
Soil: Medium consistency, tending to clayey
Cultivation method: spurred cordon (5-6,000 plants/hectare)
Harvest: by hand, second or third week of October

Winemaking Notes:
Vinification: In stainless steel at controlled temperatures, prolonged maceration (10 days)
Aging: six months in French Allier oak barriques
