Luli represents a partnership formed by Sara Floyd and the Pisoni Family. Sara Floyd is a Master Sommelier and entrepreneur with many years of food and wine experience. The Pisoni Family is known for their eponymous vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands and for Pisoni Estate and Lucia wines. Deciding they would make a great partnership and noting the shortage of handcrafted wines at reasonable prices, they set out to create a new line of wines for this niche. To achieve this, Floyd and the Pisoni Family focus on purchasing grapes from multiple vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands and the greater Monterey County—California coastal regions excellent for growing cool-climate grapes.
THE VINEYARD: The 2021 Syrah was sourced entirely from various sustainably farmed vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The vines are well-trained, carry low yields and are planted to a variety of different clones. Soils are well drained and primarily granite in composition. These factors, combined with the fog and cool winds of the Santa Lucia Highlands provide wonderful growing conditions for Pinot Noir.
The Luli Syrah was made with classic winemaking techniques: Handsorting of the fruit, native yeasts for fermentation and production in small lots. The wine was aged in ‘neutral’ French oak barrels and was not fined or filtered. The resulting balanced wine is a tribute to the region’s success with Syrah.
Sporting richly hued shades of dark ruby and near purple, the 2021 Luli Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah is a hidden gem crafted from a notoriously difficult vintage in this prestigious California appellation. Each swirl in the glass brings new life to this savory and spicy offering, with notes of freshly ground coffee, dark chocolate, new leather, and spiced plum filling setting the stage. As this deliciously pure Syrah coats the palate, waves of blackberry crumble, red cherry, and black pepper pair with hints of dried herbs de Provence and subtle meaty undertones to create a complex mélange of flavors. Approachable to its core, this wine still possesses structured tannin and remarkable acidity which suggests it will continue to age for years to come.
Ratings n Reviews93 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Intense aromas of violet, lavender and dark, rich fruits draw the nose into this bottling from a region where Syrah tends to age with remarkable intrigue and grace. Blackberry and more purple-flower flavors pop on the palate, which will only grow more cohesive, gamy and interesting with patience. Drink 2025–2041." – MK (Nov 2023)
92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"As to the 2021 Syrah Santa Lucia Highlands, it's a classic Syrah from California with its peppery, smoky black fruit, game, violet, and spring flower-driven aromatics. There's a hint of Côte Rôtie in its floral aromatics, but it brings classic Cali fruit and texture on the palate, with a voluptuous mouthfeel, solid underlying tannins, and outstanding length."
