About this Winery:
This small wine estate has established itself as one of the great crus in this territory in the heart of Tuscany, delineated by the Orcia and Ombrone valleys. The estate, formerly owned by the Biondi-Santi family, was purchased by the late Sergio Rossi (formerly at Altesino-Caparzo), and is now run by vineyard manager/director Alberto Passeri and winemaker Vittorio Fiore. They make five wines, all made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso, the only grape planted on the property. Their first vintage was in 1976, making La Gerla one of the first 35 bottlers of Brunello di Montalcino; these days, there are 280. The winery name comes from the large, old-fashioned, conical baskets that grape-harvesters used to carry on their backs.
About the Wine:
This wine is obtained from declassified Brunello, which nonetheless follows the strict production regulations, shows characteristics of freshness and typical aromas of quality young wines, fruity and vinous notes blend with more complex autumn leaves and violet.

Ratings & Reviews
93 Points - WinesCritic.com:
"Fresh and dynamic, it shows floral and fruity notes of real substance. Hints of cherries, raspberries and currants set the main scene, with thyme and lemongrass in the background. Medium-full body, decidedly composed tannins and a finish of great drinkability. One of the best Rossos in the tasting." -Raffaele Vecchione (Nov 2023)
92 Points - Falstaff:
"Bright ruby red with purple reflections. Appealing nose with cherry and wild strawberry, some cocoa butter, candle wax and a subtle hint of sealing wax. Juicy on the palate, with creamy fruit texture, clear, tightly woven tannins with a fine grip and subtle oak aromas. Good tension on the finish and minimal after-drying." (Oct 2024)
91 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Glossy without being international, polished without being overtly oaky, La Gerla’s Rosso is an outright crowdpleaser with delicately creamy strawberry fruit, cherry jam and a hint of raspberry coulis, with fine acid and tannin structure that carry the flavours through to a herb-spiked finish. From younger vines across the estate’s 12ha, this is aged in oak barrels of various capacities for up to a year. Good value and no hurry to drink. Drinking Window: 2024-2030." -Jason Millar (Aug 2024)
90 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is perfumed and exotic with pretty rose tones and sour citrus complicating its tart cherry fruit. This is silky-smooth and pliant with ripe wild berries and autumnal spices that swirl throughout. It finishes with staining length, leaving lingering licorice and sage traces.” – Eric Guido (Sep 2024)
Jeb Dunnuck:
"Youthful ruby-hued, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino shows ripe aromas of crushed berries, a hint of blue fruit, pine, and candied flowers. Mid-weight, it’s light on the palate, with dusty tannins and a modest finish.” – Audrey Frick (Feb 2024)
